Responsible Department: Health and Community Services Commentary: This order will ratify an application for funding from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. The Maine CDCP has invited Bangor Health and Community Services, as one of two municipal public health departments in Maine, to join the CDC as a subcontractor, along with the City of Portland Health Department, in responding to this U.S. CDC Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). The grant period is for three years beginning September 30, 2013 and running through September 29, 2016, with a provision for an annual re-application. The purpose of this grant is to improve health outcomes in Penobscot County, including the City of Bangor, by increasing the availability and accessibility of lower sodium food products in selected venues such as government or private worksites; congregate meal providers; or hospitals. This a competitive funding opportunity that will result in five to seven awards across the country. The Government Operations Committee voted 3-2 (Blanchette & Civiello opposed) on June 17 to recommend approval to the City Council.
