HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-08-26 13-284 ORDERCOUNCIL ACTION Item No. 13-284 Date: August 26, 2013 Item/Subject ORDER, Authorizing Grant of $2,000 to the Bangor Book Festival to Support Programming for the 2013 Festival Responsible Department: Community & Economic Development Commentary: This Order will authorize a grant in the amount of $2,000 to support the Bangor Book Festival. The Bangor Book Festival, with the Bangor Public Library as its fiscal agent, has submitted an application for funding of $2,000 in partial support of this year's Bangor Book Festival, an annual celebration of authors and/or books with a connection to Maine. Scheduled for October 4 -5th, this will be the 7th year of the event. The Cultural Commission has recommended approval of this request because of the program's popularity and benefit to the community. This item was reviewed and recommended for approval by the Business & Economic Development Committee at its August 19, 2013 meeting. ORDER, Authorizing Grant of $2,000 to the Bangor Book Festival to Support Programming for the 2013 Festival WHEREAS, the City Council has made an appropriation of funds to support arts and cultural organizations; has established a Commission on Cultural Development; and has assigned the Commmission the responsbility of reviewing grant applications from arts and cultural organizations, and to make recommendations for grant funding to the City Council; and WHEREAS, the Bangor Book Festival, with the Bangor Public Library as its fiscal agent, has submitted an application for funding of $2,000 in partial support the upcoming year's Bangor Book Festival, an annual celebration of authors and/or books with a Maine connection; and WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Development recommends the approval of the request due to the program's popularity and benefit to the community; and WHEREAS, the grant application was complete, well organized and met funding criteria; and WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Development and the Business & Economic Development Committee voted to recommend to the City Council approval of a grant in the amount of $2,000: BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR THAT A Grant of $2,000 is hereby authorized for the Bangor Public Library, fiscal agent for the Bangor Book Festival, for the 2013 Bangor Book Festival.
