Item No. 13-070
Date: February 11, 2013
Item/Subject: Order, Authorizing Application for a $35,000 Grant from National Fish and
Wildlife Foundation (NFWF)
Responsible Department: Parks & Recreation
Commentary:
This order will authorize a $35,000 grant application to the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation
(NFWF) in conjunction with several partners, including the Wildlife Habitat Council, US EPA,
USDA Forest Services and NOAA, to provide funding for this 2013 Five Star Urban Waters
Restoration Program.
The proposed phased -project is intended to improve access to the Kenduskeag stream along the
shore area known as Gomez Park, which is the "takeout" for the annual Kenduskeag Stream
Canoe Race. Phase I is an embankment stabilization project that will install Gabion Rock Baskets
(large rocks roofed and secured by wire) on the banks of Gomez Park to prevent further
degrading of the stream bank. The second phase includes an "adopt a stream" project for Arctic
Brook established by Bangor High School Students. The students in conjunction with science
teachers will obtain water samples and install plantings to create shade and canopy to eventually
lower the temperate of the brook and improve water quality. The total amount of funding being
requested is $35,000 and requires a 100% match, which would be provided by in-kind services
from the City and 3`d parry donations of items such as rock.
This was reviewed and recommended for approval by the Infrastructure Committee on January
28, 2013.
