Item/Subject: Authorizing Acceptance and Appropriation of a grant for $ $26,000 from the
Maine Office of Substance Abuse to implement strategies to increase awareness about problem
gambling; to implement a risk reduction program for youth who have violated school alcohol or
drug policies; to increase awareness about the risks of marijuana use; and to provide

Responsible Department: Health & Community Services
Commentary: This order authorizes the City Manager authorized to accept and appropriate a
grant for $26,000 from the Maine Office of Substance Abuse that would combine: substance
abuse prevention strategies; problem gambling awareness strategies; and providing VetCorps
services in our Healthy Maine Partnership service area. The two components, problem
gambling awareness and expanded substance abuse prevention strategies, were previously
accepted during the April 22, 2013 meeting. Subsequent to that date, the Maine Office of
Substance Abuse requested that the two program areas be combined into one grant, to which
the VetCorps services also be added.
