WHEREAS, Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall riots in June 1969, and works to achieve
equal justice and equal opportunity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer,
|nhenSex,Aeexua�and Two QpMtpeople; and
WHEREAS,
OnJune2B.1970,thef|mtPrideK8arohvvashe|dmarkinQthefirstann|veroaryofthe
uprising. These Pride Marches continue today throughout the Nation every June; and
WHEREAS,
July 7 will mark the 42nu ann�versary of the death of Charlie Howard, a 23-yr old gay
man who was murdered for his sexuafltyin1Q84. His death has spurred citizens nf
Bangor to hold vigi|s, memorials and pnnhaata in his memory; and
WHEREAS,
The City ofBangor iscommitted tntreating all people fairly and equ0yand m/fth
dignity and respect, and together we will continue to work toward full equality for our
LE)BTO+family, friends, and neighbors; and
WHEREAS'
The City ofBangor upholds the State OfMaine's protections for the L[9BTQ+
community that were passed in 2005, these include protections against discrimination
based mnsexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, education,
medical treatment and public accommodations; and
WHEREAS, Pride Month is anopportunity hocelebrate and bosupportive ufthe hard work ofthe
thriving Bangor LGBTQ+ community in fighting for their rights, acceptance, and to
acknowledge the ongoing work of the citizens of Bangor to advocate for equal rights;
and
WHEREAS, During the month ofJune, the City ofBangor hosts Bangor Pride, nday long
celebration starting June 27 with events throughout the day, including e Pride Parade
and Festival; and
VVHERE4S. The City qfBangor thanks the volunteers and sponsors inthe community for working
hard to make Bangor Pride 2026 representative, engaging and affirming.
NOW, THEREFORE, iSusan 01.Hawes, Mayor ofthe City ofBangor, onbehalf ofthe City Council
and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim June as Pride Month in the City of Bangor, and urge all
community members to be respectful and supportive of their fellow citizens regardless of race, gender,
