Amending Chapter 148 of the Code of the City of Bangor by Including Broadway Park, Chapin Park, and
Davenport Park as Historic Sites
Summary
The proposed change would update Chapter 148 of the City's Code of Ordinances to add Broadway Park,
Chapin Park, and Davenport Park to the listing of Historic Sites.
Broadway Park and Chapin Park are two of the oldest green spaces in Bangor. They were designed within the
context of their surrounding neighborhoods and had the purpose of providing residents a place of respite to
enjoy fresh air. They were set aside as public parks in the 1830's and later redesigned by Boston landscape
architect Frank M. Blaisdell. Davenport Park is the remaining piece of an earlier public square located on Main
Street known as Davenport Square. The park also contains the Battleship Maine Monument, which
commemorates ships that sank during the Spanish-American war, and which is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places.
The Historic Preservation Commission and Parks and Recreation Director have expressed interest in local
designation of these parks.
