Broadway Park and Chapin Park are two of the oldest green spaces in Bangor. They were designed within the context of their surrounding neighborhoods and had the purpose of providing residents a place of respite to enjoy fresh air. They were set aside as public parks in the 1830's and later redesigned by Boston landscape architect Frank M. Blaisdell. Davenport Park is the remaining piece of an earlier public square located on Main Street known as Davenport Square. The park also contains the Battleship Maine Monument, which commemorates ships that sank during the Spanish-American war, and which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Historic Preservation Commission and Parks and Recreation Director have expressed interest in local designation of these parks.
