PROCLAIMING MAY AS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH
WHEREAS, Older Americans Month is celebrated each year to recognize the contributions, resilience
and vitality of older adults; and
WHEREAS, The annual observance was first established in 1963 to highlight aging trends and
reaffirm commitments to supporting seniors; and
WHEREAS, The theme this May is Champion Your Health, focusing on prevention, wellness and
personal responsibility, by making informed decisions that support independence, as
cornerstones of healthy aging; and
WHEREAS, The month serves to further recognize the achievements of older Americans, raise
awareness about aging issues and promote community programs that support seniors;
and
WHEREAS, This observance holds particular relevance in Maine, which has more than 400,000
people aged 60 and over who contribute skills, talent, wisdom and experience; and
WHEREAS, Our communities benefit when people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can
participate fully with the highest level of independence; and
WHEREAS, Older Mainers improve our communities through intergenerational relationships,
community service, civic engagement and meaningful contributions to Maine's workforce
and economy; and
WHEREAS, Maine must ensure that as we age, we have the resources and support needed to stay
involved in our communities, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity and connectedness;
and
WHEREAS, It's important to recognize the profound impact of ineaningful interactions and social
connection on the well-being and health of older adults and caregivers in our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I,Susan M. Hawes, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council, do
hereby proclaim May as Older Americans Month and encourage the people of Bangor to promote
programs that foster connection and support for older adults and build stronger communities for all.
