HomeMy WebLinkAbout2026-04-27 04/27/2026 1 ProclamationC.1Tt COUNCIL PROCLAIMING APRIL 30 AS NATIONAL THERAPY ANIMAL DAY WHEREAS, There are thousands of Pet Partners therapy animal teams serving in communities across the United States; and WHEREAS, Therapy animal teams in Bangor — including those affiliated with Pet Partners of Eastern Maine and the Code Koda therapy dog program at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center — are part of a growing network of more than 30 teams locally, with continued expansion across the State of Maine; and WHEREAS, These teams provide meaningful support across hospitals, schools, colleges, libraries, grief and bereavement programs, nursing homes, workplace wellness initiatives, and community settings, becoming increasingly woven into the fabric of our community; and WHEREAS, Therapy animal teams have helped individuals overcome fear, supported children in developing literacy and confidence, provided comfort and healing to those who are injured or grieving, and sat vigil with people at the end of life, offering presence, peace and dignity; and WHEREAS, Therapy animal teams are utilized in times of crisis and trauma, including providing support to first responders and community members following critical incidents; and WHEREAS, Scientific research demonstrates that therapy animal interactions can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, decrease anxiety and depression, and improve overall emotional and physical well-being; and WHEREAS, Therapy animal teams play an essential role in strengthening community connection, resilience and well-being through the human -animal bond. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Susan M. Hawes, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim April 30 as National Therapy Animal Day in recognition of the vital work conducted by therapy animal teams in Maine and beyond.
