HomeMy WebLinkAbout2026-04-27 04-27-2026 2 Proclamationf1Tt f,-0UNr1L RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANT WORK OF WARMING SHELTERS IN BANGOR WHEREAS, Warming shelters provide a critical resource for people experiencing housing instability during the cold months; and WHEREAS, Warming centers in Bangor are operated by emergency shelters, churches and other community -based organizations that provide cots, blankets, food, avenues to resources, and other services; and WHEREAS, Warming shelters can face difficult operational challenges such as insufficient funding and a shortage of volunteers to maintain staffing levels; and WHEREAS, Shelter leaders indicated in fall 2025 that warming centers may be forced to close, prompting the City of Bangor to partner with them to find solutions; and WHEREAS, The City Council responded in October 2025 by redirecting $60,000 in state General Assistance funds for the City to two warming shelters, and then a month later approved another $60,000 in GA monies for the same shelters; and WHEREAS, The two warming shelters, Brick Church and Together Place, join with two other Bangor shelters, the Mansion Church and the Well Warming Center/Jericho Road, to provide aid to those living outside during the winter; and WHEREAS, The overnight centers collectively gave shelter and assistance to approximately 120 people on the harshest winter evenings; and WHEREAS, They have proven invaluable in providing support services to the most vulnerable people in our community. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Susan M. Hawes, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby express deep appreciation for the work and commitment shown by warming shelters in the City of Bangor.
