The City of Bangor is deeply concerned about recent instances of the use of hateful, intolerant, and discriminatory language during Bangor City Council meetings which has undermined the spirit of inclusivity and respect for diversity that is the foundation of the City of Bangor. The City of Bangor is further concerned that recent instances of the use of hateful, intolerant, and discriminatory language during Bangor City Council meetings will discourage robust civic engagement. The City of Bangor, and its City Council, urge the people of Bangor to stand in solidarity with one another and in support of efforts to condemn hate speech, discrimination, and intolerance and hereby condemns individuals and organizations that promote and utilize hate speech, intolerance, and discrimination. Committee Action Committee: Action: Staff Comments & Approvals Iq City Manager Introduced for: New Business 11 Meeting Date: El For: Against: City Solicitor % 0-/U Finance Director CITY OF BANGOR RESOLVE Date: 11/03/2025 Item No: 25-314 Assigned to Councilor: Tremble 11/03/2025 25-314 Condemning Speech, Commonly Referred to as Hate Speech, that Expresses Hate, Encourages Violence, or Incites Hatred and/or Discrimination Against a Person or Group WHEREAS, the City of Bangor and members of the Bangor City Council recognizes that hate speech, prejudice, racism, xenophobia, gender discrimination, and related forms of intolerance are obstacles to the success of our community; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor and the members of the Bangor City Council, publicly condemn hate speech and extremism motivated by discrimination on the grounds of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or other protected classes; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor and the members of the Bangor City Council express deep concern at recent instances of the use of hateful, intolerant, and discriminatory language during Bangor City Council meetings; and WHEREAS, these recent instances serve to undermine the spirit of inclusivity and respect for diversity that is the foundation of the City of Bangor; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor and the members of the Bangor City Council urge the people of Bangor to stand in solidarity with one another and in support of efforts to condemn hate speech, discrimination, and intolerance; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Bangor and the members of the Bangor City Council, unequivocally condemns individuals and organizations who promote and utilize hate speech in all its forms, including that which is motivated by discrimination on the grounds of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or any other protected class.
