HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-05-12 05/12/2025 Proclamationf1Tt C-0UNr11 PROCLAIMING MAY AS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH WHEREAS, Mental health is essential to everyone's overall health and well-being as we all contend with times of difficulty and stress in our lives; and WHEREAS, One in five U.S. adults — about 187,000 Mainers — lives with a mental health condition; and WHEREAS, The National Alliance on Mental Illness says 50 percent of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75 percent by age 24, early identification and treatment can improve lifelong outcomes for young people; and WHEREAS, Suicide is the 10t" leading cause of death in the United States, the second leading cause among both youth and young adults, and 90 percent of people who die by suicide had shown symptoms of a mental health condition; and WHEREAS, We stand together with people in our state to help end the silence and stigma that for too long has made people feel isolated or alone and has discouraged them from seeking the help and support they need; and WHEREAS, With early and effective treatment, those individuals with mental health conditions can recover and lead fulfilling lives; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Cara Pelletier, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month in Bangor. I call upon the citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, and schools in Bangor to recommit to increasing awareness and understanding of mental and behavioral health, the steps our citizens can take to protect their mental health, and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental and behavioral health conditions.
