HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-03-12 School Committee Minutes MINUTES BANGOR SCHOOL COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2025 School Committee Members Present: Chair Sara Luciano, Vice Chair Tim Surrette, Katie Brydon, Marwa Hassanien, Shelly Okere, Imke Schessler-Jandreau, Ben Sprague. A. 1. & 2. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Sara Luciano and the pledge of allegiance followed. 3. a. The Bangor School Department and the Bangor School Committee recognized the Bangor High School Speech and Debate team as 2025 Debate State Champions as well as: Beatrix Foster—first place in the Lincoln Douglas Debate Tobias Kennedy—first place in Humorous Interpretation Stephanie Hendrix—Maine Forensics Association Coach of the Year B. Adjustments to the Agenda: No Adjustments to the Agenda. C. Public Comments: No Public Comments. D. 1. a. Superintendent Robinson provided the first reading of the FY26 Budget. Voting was tabled to a future meeting. D. 2. a. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kathy Harris-Smedberg presented the names of the students receiving the Superintendent's Academic Excellence award for 2025. b. Superintendent Robinson provided a district update to the committee. c. Superintendent Robinson reported the following retirements: Cynthia Fish IEP Compliance Bangor Regional Program Kathryn Griffith PreK Teacher Abraham Lincoln School Mark Hackett Work Study Coordinator Bangor High School Joseph Pelletier History Teacher Bangor High School Karen Smart Special Education Teacher James F. Doughty School Theodore Taylor Science Teacher Bangor High School E. 1. a. 1-2. VOTED 7-0 to approve the Minutes of the February 26, 2025 Regular School Committee Meeting and the March 5, 2025 Workshop Meeting. b. l. VOTED 7-0 to approve the October 2024 Financial Report. 2. VOTED 7-0 to approve the November 2024 Financial Report. c. 1. Superintendent Robinson introduced the new Technology Director, Joshua Young. Minutes, Regular Meeting, March 12, 2025 2• 2. VOTED 6-0, 1 abstain, to approve the following extra-duty assignments for the 2024- 2025 school year: James Strout (2°d yr) A Baseball Coach James F. Doughty School Matthew O'Connell Assistant Track Coach James F. Doughty School Brook Dupuy Assistant Track Coach James F. Doughty School Peyton Arbour (ET) (.5) IEP Clerical Downeast School d. VOTED 7-0 to approve the second reading of the following policies: 1. Revised Policy BDB— School Committee Officers 2. Revised Policy BDE—Subcommittees 3. Revised Policy BDF—Advisory Committees to the School Committee 4. Revised Policy BE— School Committee Meeting Schedule 5. New Policy BEDL—Adjournment of Meetings e. Committee Member Katie Brydon shared the following donations: To Downeast School from the Brick Church, winter clothing for students, having a total dollar value of$300. To Vine Street School from Laney-Wellehan Warehouse, 19 pairs of shoes for students, having a total dollar value of$100. To Fairmount School from Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis Club, 15 books for Community Reading Day, having a total dollar value of$100. To William S. Cohen School from Beth and Art Kotredes, a cash donation to support students, having a total dollar value of 200. To Bangor High School from Dr. Scott Curtis, multiple sheets of mat board, having a total dollar value of$2,500. VOTED 7-0 to approve all donations. E. 2. a. VOTED 7-0 to approve first reading of the following policies; 1. Revised Policy ACAD—Hazing 2. New Policy BEC—Executive Sessions Policy and Law 3. Revised Policy BEDH—Public Comment 4. Revised Policy GDB-10—Educational Technology Staff Compensation Guide 5. Revised Policy JIE—Pregnant Students F. 1. Member Brydon congratulated the Bangar Band as well as Director Phinney for a great all city concert last night, congratulated Member Crespo for her Superintendent's Award, spoke in support of starting a task force for increasing student enrollment, and thanked and acknowledged the retiring teachers for their service. Member Surette thanked the retirees and wished them well. Minutes, Regular Meeting, March 12, 2025 3• Member Sprague acknowledge the retirees as well as the recent passing of a former Bangor School Secretary. Member Hassanien congratulated Members Crespo and Brozman for the Humanities Honor Society as well as Member Crespo for the Superintendent's Award. Member Luciano thanked the Fruit Street PTO for a successful Spaghetti Dinner, and thanked UTC for working together on a new podcast. F. 3. b. Member Bryden updated on the UTC Skills competition that will begin tomorrow. UTC is currently fundraising for student's attending national competitions, starting with a SK happening on May 3ra F. 4, Member Crespo presented an update to the committee including the result of spirit week (Seniors won), Regional Mental Health Summit at Husson tomorrow, and no school for students on Friday—teacher in service. Member Brozman noted that spring sports will be starting, sign ups were held this week and the Junior class will host a craft fair on March 23`d. H. 1.
