HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-10-04 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes � = . .�� � ,. @� - � CITY o� BANGOR Commission on Cultural Development October 4, 2024 Penobscot Room at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow Street Meetinq Minutes Commissioners Present: Hollie Adams, Sundance Campbell, Kelly Chenot, Nina Earley, Kal Elmore, Barbara McDade, Samantha Schipani, Lovern Stockwell Others: Anne Krieg — Director of Development 1. A quorum being present the October 4, 2024 meeting of the Commission on Cultural Development was called to order by Chair Earley at 8:30 AM. 2. Meeting Minutes— Motion passed to approve the minutes of the September 6th meeting. 3. Report of Chair— Chair Earley reported that her only updates pertain to ARTober, which she will discuss during the committee report. Reminded Commissioners about Dr. Liam Riordan's request for volunteers at his students' table at the Sidewalk Art Festival. Commissioner Elmore reminded Commissioners that this evening is the First Friday Art Walk. 4. Financial Report— No questions or comments. 5. Committee Reports: a. Grant— Committee Chair Adams gave a brief overview of the grant applications received. Reiterated previous recommendation to split $20,000 evenly between two grant cycles. Reported that she will work with committee members to schedule a meeting for initial application review, and reminded Commissioners that full application review will be held at Commission's November meeting. b. Cultural Asset—Committee Chair Greenlaw not present; no update given. Chair Earley reminded Commissioners that new committee chair will need to be elected as Greenlaw terming out at the end of the year. c. ARTober—Chair Earley gave positive report on kick-off event, and gave brief overview of expenditures thus far. Commissioner McDade asked about getting a plaque with all of the names of the Bangor Arts Award winners —Commissioners and Development Director Anne Krieg discussed options. Vice Chair Adams brought up suggestion that more than one award be offered in future years. Commissioner Schipani mentioned some feedback regarding the impartiality of Bangor Arts Award jurors —Commissioners discussed. 6. Sidewalk Art Festival Art Installation — Betsy Lundy, Downtown Bangor Partnership, presented to the Commission and gave an overview of proposed art installation. Discussed possible locations with Commissioners and Development Director Krieg; Krieg gave additional guidance regarding process for installing on public property. Chair Earley suggested discussing further at December meeting. 7. RFP for Public Restroom Art Project— Chair Earley presented draft to Commissioners and gave overview of her questions for staff; requested a meeting with Parks & Recreation Director Tracy Willette. Discussed whether Commissioners want to require Bangor residency for artists for this project. Vice Chair Adams suggested opening up eligibility to artists in the greater Bangor area— Commissioners and Lundy discussed. Earley discussed timeline of RFP with Krieg. 8. Staff Updates a. Pickering Square Art Installation —Commissioners agreed to postpone discussion of this item until November meeting. 9. Other Business a. Commissioner McDade notified Commissioners of upcoming event for City Council and School Committee candidates. 10. Adjourned at 9:34 AM.
