HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-09-06 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes � = . .�� � ,. @� - � CITY o� BANGOR Commission on Cultural Development September 6, 2024 Penobscot Room at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow Street Meetinq Minutes Commissioners Present: Hollie Adams (via Zoom), Sundance Campbell, Kelly Chenot, Cody Clark, Nina Earley, Kal Elmore, Barbara McDade, Samantha Schipani, Lovern Stockwell Others: Anne Krieg — Director of Development, Sarah Maquillan — Development Assistant 1. A quorum being present the September 6, 2024 meeting of the Commission on Cultural Development was called to order by Chair Earley at 8:30 AM. 2. Meeting Minutes— Motion passed to approve the minutes of the August 2�d meeting. 3. Sign Rehabilitation on Kenduskeag Stream Heritage Trail — Dr. Liam Riordan, University of Maine, and his students gave a slideshow presentation on their project. Commissioner Schipani asked about the estimated cost and whether any funding has yet been acquired. Students and Dr. Riordan responded that project is still in early stages, so costs are unclear. Chair Earley confirmed that general support from the Commission is requested, as well as approval for a table at the ARTober kick-off event. Commissioner Campbell expressed support for the project and asked about students' plan to facilitate broad, difficult conversations —students discussed and responded. Commissioner Schipani asked about the length of the project and whether there is a succession plan if it is intended to last longer than the course of this class. Riordan responded that the project is for the duration of the semester-long class, but he will lead the succession plan. Commissioner Chenot suggested collaborating with the Downtown Bangor Partnership and the Wabanaki center. Riordan discussed emphasis on public, inclusive history and gave overview of upcoming important dates. 4. Bangor Beautiful Murals (Kenduskeag Pump Station and Abe Lincoln School) —Greg Edwards, Annette Dodd, and Jill Frederick presented to the Commission. Frederick provided overview of mural project planned for Kenduskeag pump station; Commissioners Campbell and Schipani brought up several coordination ideas, and Development Director Anne Krieg clarified the Council approval process. Commissioner McDade moved support, seconded by Commissioner Schipani. All in favor— motion passed. Dodd provided overview of mural project planned for Abe Lincoln School; Commissioner Elmore asked about the formatting of the art pieces and Dodd provided clarification. Report of Chair—Chair Earley reported that artist's name on canoe sculpture plaque is misspelled; staff to follow up on this. Earley also updated Commission on her and Commissioner Schipani's work on the RFP for the public restroom art project. 6. Financial Report— Balances of$20,300.60 (for grants) and $2,500.00 (for ARTober) as of today's date; no questions from Commissioners. 7. Committee Reports: a. Grant— No update from Committee Chair Adams; encouraged Commissioners to publicly share information about application deadline for fall grant cycle. Cultural Asset—As Committee Chair Greenlaw was not present, no update given; Chair Earley noted that Committee will need to elect new chair as Greenlaw is terming out soon. c. ARTober—Chair Earley reported that the jurors for the Bangor Arts Award will be meeting on Monday, and marketing & informational materials are presently being updated. Commissioners also discussed use of City's website and social media for ARTober information. 8. Staff Updates a. Public Restroom Art Follow-Up— Development Director Krieg confirmed that replacement restrooms are currently being installed, so Commissioners can move forward with RFP. Commissioners are also requested to propose a budget for the project. Commissioner Elmore and Chair Earley discussed the timeline with Krieg, and Earley requested art to be installed on removable wood panels. Commissioner McDade suggested offering a theme for artist submissions; Commissioner Schipani suggested this be "community." b. Pickering Park Art Installation Follow-Up— Development Director Krieg reported that this will be discussed more in-depth at next meeting in October. 9. Adjourned at 9:33 AM.
