HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-09-11 School Committee Minutes MINUTES BANGOR SCHOOL COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 11, 2024 School Committee Members Present: Katie Brydon, Shelly Okere, Imke Schessler-Jandreau, Ben Sprague, and Tim Surrette. Chair Marwa Hassanien and Vice Chair Sara Luciano were excused.. A. 1. & 2. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Member Schessler-Jandreau and the pledge of allegiance followed. B. Adjustments to the Agenda: No adjustments to the agenda. C. Public Comments: Dawson Nevells from Bangor spoke about school safety following the recent Georgia school shooting. D. 2. a. Superintendent Robinson provided an update to the committee from the first week of school. b. Director of Business Services, Jerry Hayman, provided an update on summer projects. c. Community Outreach and Safety Director, Ray Phinney, provided an update on school safety. d. Superintendent Robinson reported the following resignations for school year 2024- 2025: Randall Allen Enrichment Coordinator James F. Doughty School E.l.a.l-2. VOTED 5-0 to approve the Minutes of the August 21, 2024 Regular School Committee Meeting. b. 1. a. VOTED 4-0, 1 abstain, to approve the following teacher nominations for the 2024- 2025 school year, this is a one-year teaching position: Jamie Coburn Grade 5 Teacher Fairmount School 2. VOTED 5-0 to approve the following Extra Duty Assignments for 2024-2025: Angela Domina Dramatics Advisor James F. VOTED 5-0 to approve the second reading of the following revised policies: 1. Revised Policy ACAB — Harassment, Discrimination, and Sexual Harassment of School Department Employees 2. Revised Policy ADA— School System Goals 3. Revised Policy ADAA— School System Commitment to Standards for Ethical and Responsible Behavior 4. Revised Policy ADF—Maine Learning Results d. Committee Member Shelly Okere shared the following donations: To Abraham Lincoln School from the Charleston Church, 23 backpacks for students, having a total dollar value of$460. To Downeast School from Owens and Miner, school supplies to support students, having a total dollar value of$300. To Downeast School from the Air National Guard, school supplies to support students, having a total dollax value of$300. To Fruit Street School from the Charleston Church, backpacks for students, having a total dollar value of$300. To Fairmount School from Subaru Loves Learning and Adopt a Classroom, 6 classroom supply kits, having a total dollar value of$450. To Fairmount School from Subaru Loves Learning and Adopt a Classroom, a cash donation to support classrooms, having a total dollar value of$3,000. Minutes, Regular Meeting, September 11, 2024 3• To Fairmount School from the Charleston Church, 24 backpacks for students, having a total dollar value of$600. VOTED 5-0 to approve all donations. F. 1. Member Jandreau addressed a recent article printed in the Bangor Daily News regarding the Fairmount School, encouraged people to be mindful of words and actions and to keep in mind the challenges that teachers and administration face. Member Brydon applauded members and staff for a successful start to the school year, and encouraged a monthly district update from Dr Robinson. Member Sprague praised the JROTC for the September llt" memorial on the waterfront. Member Sprague noted the positive trend in student head count for this year. Member Sprague praised Member Jandreau for stepping in to lead the meeting and noted that in future meetings where the Chair and Vice-Chair are both unavailable, the members in attendance should vote for the stand in. F. 3. b. Member Brydon and Member Surette attended the first UTC Meeting, they have over 700 students this year including remote classes at area high schools including Bangor High School. Member Brydon mentioned a bond to support UTC that will be on the voting ballot this November and encouraged support for that. 4. Member Crespo noted that all fall sports are active and wished everyone good luck in the new school year. H. 1. Important dates were reviewed by Member Imke Schessler-Jandreau. I. Member Surette spoke about the recent article regarding teacher shortages and gave praise for the substitute teachers. Member Okere supported the comments of the committee members and gave appreciation for staff in the district. Member Brydon recognized Student Member Crespo for her time and dedication to the committee. J.
