HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-08-21 School Committee Minutes MINUTES BANGOR SCHOOL COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 21, 2024 School Committee Members Present: Chair Marwa Hassanien, Vice Chair Sara Luciano, Katie Brydon, Shelly Okere, and Tim Surrette. Member Imke Schessler-Jandreau was excused, Member Ben Sprague attended via zoom until 7:40 p.m. A. 1. & 2. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Marwa Hassanien and the pledge of allegiance followed. B. Adjustments to the Agenda: D. 2. c. COVID Grant Report D. 2. d. Report of Resignation(s) D. 2. e. Report of Reassignment(s) VOTED 6-0 to approve adjustments to the agenda. G Public Comments: Doug Dunbar of Hermon spoke about Narcan training for staff and thanked Bangor School Department for being involved. D. l. a. Superintendent Robinson recommended Committee approval for the Griffin Road Proj ect. VOTED 5-1, to approve the Griffin Road Project. b. Superintendent Robinson recommended Committee approval for the Bangor School Department to proceed with the application process for the 2024-2025 Rating Cycle Application for Major Capital School Construction Program. VOTED 6-0 to approve application submission for the Fairmount School. VOTED 6-0 to approve application submission for the Mary Snow School. VOTED 6-0 to approve application submission for the Downeast School. D. 2. a. Principal Paul Butler provided the Committee with an update on the restructuring of the Graduation Coach position at Bangor High School. b. Superintendent Robinson provided the Committee with an update on what has been happening at the Bangor School Department over the summer months. c, Assistant Superintendent Kathy Harris-Smedberg updated the Committee on the COVID Grant funds. d. Superintendent Robinson reported the following resignations for school year 2024- 2025: Jameson Ploch Special Education Teacher Bangor High School Hope Ouellette (.5) Fall Cheer Coach Bangor High School Minutes, Regular Meeting,August 21, 2024 2• e. Superintendent Robinson reported the following teacher reassignments for school year 2024-2025: Felancy Grant from Special Education Teacher (Project Transition) at Bangor High School to (.5) Special Edcuation Teacher (Multiple Handicap) and (.5) Special Education Teacher (Project Transition) at Bangor High School. Tracy Reardon from Special Education Teacher (Multiple Handicap) at Bangor High School to (.5) Special Education Teacher (Multiple Handicap) and (.5) Special Education Teacher (SC) at Mary Snow School. E.l.a.l-2. VOTED 5-0 to approve the Minutes of the July 17, 2024 Regular School Committee Meeting and the August 7, 2024 Special School Committee Meeting. b. 1. VOTED 5-0 to approve the revised bonding request above the SRRF funding to complete projects at William S. Cohen School, James F. Doughty School, Bangor High School and Mary Snow School. c. l. a. VOTED 5-0, to approve the following teacher nominations for the 2024-2025 school year, with a one-year probationary contract: Alexander Randall Special Ed Teacher Fairmount School Alexa Hirsch School Nurse James F. Doughty School Laurie Hatch Special Ed Teacher Vine Street School Karen Dysart Grade 4 Teacher Fairmount School 2. VOTED 5-0 to approve the following Extra Duty Assignments for 2024-2025: Justin Marks Enrichment Coordinator William S. Cohen School Eric Steadman Math Department Head Bangor High School Brianna Sciacca (2)Special Ed Department Head Bangor High School d. VOTED 5-0 to make the following amendment on policy ACA: Replace the phrase "stakeholder" with"partners" VOTED 5-0 to approve the second reading of the following revised policies: l. Revised Policy AC — Nondiscrimination, Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action 2. New Policy ACA - Equity 3. Revised Policy IMB —Teaching About Controversial/Sensitive Issues 4. Revised Policy IMBA—Patriotic Exercises E. 2. a. VOTED 5-0 to approve first reading of the following new and revised policies: 1. Revised Policy ACAB — Harassment, Discrimination, and Sexual Harassment of School Department Employees 2. Revised Policy ADA— School System Goals 3. Member Okere thanked Doug for his comments and information regarding Narcan at the start of the meeting. H. 1. Important dates were reviewed by Chair Marwa Hassanien. I. Member Surrette spoke about the challenges that the school department has faced recently. He acknowledged the amazing work of Bangor School Department Administrators and the need to build trust with the team moving forward. J.
