HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-03-14 School Committee Minutes MINUTES BANGOR SCHOOL COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 14, 2024 School Committee Members Present: Chair Marwa Hassanien, Vice Chair Sara Luciano, Katie Brydon, Shelly Okere, Imke Schessler-Jandreau, Timothy Surrette and Ben Sprague. A. 1. & 2. The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Chair Marwa Hassanien and the pledge of allegiance followed. B. Adjustments to the Agenda: No adjustments to the agenda C. Public Comments: No Public Comments D. 2. a. Superintendent Tager provided an update on policy BD and the School Committee Meeting schedule. b, Director of Business Services, Jerry Hayman, introduced the 2024-2025 School Budget. c. Superintendent Tager reported the following retirements: Jennifer Boehmer English Teacher James F. Doughty School Kelly Ellis Music Teacher Fairmount/Mary Snow David Johnson Special Education Teacher Fairmount School Anne Wholly Occupational Therapist WSCS/BHS E.l.a.l. VOTED 7-0 to approve the Minutes of the February 28, 2024 Regular School Committee Meeting. b. 1. VOTED 6-0, one abstain, to approve the following teacher nomination for the 2023-2024 school year with a one-year probationary contract. Rose Pompey ML Teacher District c. Committee Member Imke Jandreau shared the following donation: To William S. Cohen School from Beth and Art Kotredes, a cash donation to support students, having a total dollar value of$250. VOTED 7-0 to approve all donations. 2. a. 1-9 VOTED 7-0 to approve the first reading of the following revised policies: 1. Revised Policy JFHA—Complaint Procedure for Persons with Disabilities Minutes, Regular Meeting, March 14, 2024 2• 2. Revised Policy JG— Student Discipline 3. Revised Policy JGD— Suspension 4. Revised Policy JGE—Expulsion of Students 5. Revised Policy JHB—Truancy 6. Revised Policy JHCB —Life-Sustaining Emergency 7. Revised Policy JHCD—Administering Medications to Students 8. Revised Policy JHD—Suicide Prevention 9. Revised Policy JICA— Student Dress F. 1. Member Sprague recognized 14th Street School for the parent event tonight. Member Sprague thanked the committee for clarification and progress on the e-mail addresses and the meeting schedule, and wished a peaceful Ramadan. Member Brydon praised the recent family events at the schools, and also the music program in the schools. Member Surrette wished Superintendent Tager well and thanked him for his service to the Bangor School Department. F. 3. Member Okere updated on the recent DEIB Recruitment and Retention meeting. Chair Hassanien updated on the DEIB Mental Health subcommittee meeting. Member Brydon spoke of the Skills week going on for UTC, happening at the Cross Insurance Center. Member Surrette recently attended the UTC meeting and will update the group at next weeks meeting. F. 4„ Member Crespo and Member Dusablon updated the committee on various high school events and athletics. H. l. Important dates were reviewed by Chair Marwa Hassanien. I. No additional Questions/Comments J. VOTED 7-0 to enter executive session at 8:15 p.m. for the purpose of discussion regarding negotiations with the Teachers' Bargaining Unit pursuant to 1 M.R.S.A §405(6)(D). K.
