HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-09-12 School Committee Minutes MINUTES BANGOR SCHOOL COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 12, 2023 School Committee Members Present: Chair Marwa Hassanien, Vice Chair Timothy Surrette, Sara Luciano, Clare Mundell, and Ben Sprague. Members Susan Sorg and Imke Schessler-Jandreau were absent. A. 1. & 2. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Marwa Hassanien and the pledge of allegiance followed. A. 3. a. The Bangor School Deparhnent and Bangor School Committee recognized Jamie Bartlett for being named the 2023 Maine Social Worker of the year. B. Adjustments to the Agenda: No adjustments to the agenda C. Public Coinments: Mike from Alpha Sigma Phi presented flyers for the upcoming trunk or treat at UMaine Orono. Doug Dunbar works with Penobscot County cares, he spoke regarding expanding overdose awareness and Narcan Training in Bangor to help combat the overdose crisis. D. 1. a. VOTED 5-0 to approve the first reading of the comprehensive emergency plan. D. 2. a. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kathy Harris-Smedberg reviewed LD 1315, An Act to require public school to offer training for secondary students on the administration of Naloxone Hydrochloride, and the plan for Bangor School Department to be compliant. b. Superintendent Tager reported the following resignations: Michele Lang Art Teacher powneast/Vine/Bangor Regional c. Superintendent Tager reported the following reassignment: Jillian Cookson from Speech/Language Pathologist at Fairmount School to Speech/Language Pathologist at Fourteenth Street School. E. 1 .a. 1. VOTED 5-0 to approve the Minutes of the September 27, 2023 Regular School Committee Meeting. b. l.a. VOTED 7-0 to approve the following extra-duty assigrunents for school year 2023-2024: Minutes, Regular Meeting, October 12, 2023 2. Sara York (.375) IEP Coordinator Abe Lincoln School Jeannie McAlpine (.5) IEP Coordinator powneast School Jessica Lee (.5) IEP Coordinator powneast School John Cangelosi Mountain/Trail Bike Advisor Bangor High School c. Committee Member Tim Surette shared the following donations: To James F. Doughty School from Moe's Original BBQ Restaurant, meal vouchers for students and families, having a total dollar value of$500. To Fruit Street School from the Bangor Elks Lodge#244, dictionaries for Grade 3 students, having a total dollar value of$178. To Abraham Lincoln School from the Rock Church, water bottles and gift cards for students and staff,having a total dollar value of$400. To Abraham Lincoln School from the Bangor Elks Lodge#244, dictionaries for Grade 3 students, having a total dollar value of$165. VOTED 5-0 to approve all donations. 2. a. 1-2.VOTED 5-0 to approve first reading of the following revised policies: 1. Revised Policy GDB-8 —Adult and Community Education Compensation Guide 2. Revised Policy JGF—Use of Physical Restraint and Seclusion F. 1. Member Ben Sprague requested coverage in the emergency plan for accidental overdose. Member Ben Sprague shared concerns regarding the frequency of the scheduled fire/lockdown drills. Member Ben Sprague wished Member Tim Surrette a happy birthday, Member Clare Mundell spoke about the information found on trauma informed lockdown drills. Member Clare Mundell agreed with the suggestion to add coverage on accidental overdose in the emergency plan also wants to suggest that Narcan training be mandatory vs optional. Member Tim Surrette would also like to see Narcan training as mandatory for employees, questioned the process for getting students trained. Chair Marwa Hassanien spoke regarding the lockdown drills and stressed the importance of having them. F. 4. Luke overviewed the High School events happening this week for Homecoming. H. 1.
