HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-11-03 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes � = . .�� � ,. @� - � CITY o� BANGOR Commission on Cultural Development November 3, 2023 Bangor City Hall Council Chambers Meetinq Minutes Commissioners Present: Hollie Adams, Jane Bragg, Nina Earley, Kal Elmore, Tristan Greenlaw, Barbara McDade, Margaret Rieley, Lovern Stockwell Others: Anne Krieg — Director of Development, Sarah Maquillan — Development Assistant 1. A quorum being present the November 3, 2023 meeting of the Commission on Cultural Development was called to order by Chair Adams at 8:30 AM. 2. Meeting Minutes— Motion passed to approve the minutes of the October 6th meeting. 3. Report of the Chair—Chair Adams reported that Justin Russell will be invited to the Commission's December meeting to discuss his Bangor events calendar. Commissioner Elmore presented an events calendar from Waterville as an example for Commissioners to view. 4. Review of Grant Applications —Commissioner Earley asked each of the applicants to briefly present their applications. Commissioner McDade asked for confirmation of available grant funds; Development Assistant Maquillan confirmed there is $20,000 available. a. Jen Shepherd presented the grant application for Penobscot Theatre Company. No questions from the Commission. b. Shavaun Rigler presented the grant application for Bangor Public Library. Commissioner Elmore added additional information about the program's partnership with local students. No questions from the Commission. c. Renia Shterenberg presented the grant application for Bangor Symphony Orchestra. Chair Adams asked about the budget and the estimated costs that will be spent in Bangor. Shterenberg clarified this component of the budget and noted that it is primarily for lodging for musicians travelling from out of town, as well as for fees paid to a local marketing company. Also confirmed what is included in the project's total budget. d. Applicant Chris Packard unable to attend. Commissioners discussed his application at length. Commissioner Bragg mentioned some concern that the application may not meet grant guidelines; Commissioner Stockwell agreed. After discussing, commissioners unanimously agreed that it would meet the guidelines to award grant funds for 50% reimbursement (up to a certain amount) for materials & supplies only. 5. Following discussion of the four applications received, the following votes were taken: a. MOVED, SECONDED and VOTED to recommend to City Council approval of the grant request submitted by Penobscot Theatre in the amount of$5,000 in support of its production of"My Story is Gluskabe." b. MOVED, SECONDED and VOTED to recommend to City Council approval of the grant request submitted by the Bangor Public Library in the amount of$2,000 in support of its exhibit of "Americans Who Tell the Truth" and related activities. c. MOVED, SECONDED and VOTED to recommend to City Council approval of the grant request submitted by Bangor Symphony in the amount of$5,000 in support of its outreach to the unsheltered community. � = . .�� � ,. @� - � CITY o� BANGOR d. MOVED, SECONDED and VOTED to recommend to City Council that the application submitted by Christopher Packard for support of the second annual Authors' Book Fair and Festival be granted for up to $1,000 for expenses of supplies and materials, not to exceed 50% of those expenses. 6. Other Business —Commissioner Greenlaw reported that he is working with City staff to facilitate editing and continued development of the Story Maps. Staff will be asked to meet with the Commission at its January meeting. There will be a guest at the December meeting on the subject of an online calendar. 7. Adjourned at 9:15 AM.
