Commission on Cultural Development
October 6, 2023
Bangor City Hall Council Chambers
Meetinq Minutes
Commissioners Present: Hollie Adams, Jane Bragg, Nina Earley, Barbara McDade
Others: Anne Krieg — Director of Development, Sarah Maquillan — Development Assistant
1. A quorum being present the October 6, 2023 meeting of the Commission on Cultural Development was
called to order by Chair Adams at 8:30 AM.
2. Chair Adams reported that she has become aware of a new on-line events calendar (Sevents) for
Bangor area residents and visitors. This is a project of One Ten Digital founded by Justin Russell.
Commissioner Adams suggests we invite Justin to one of our next meetings. Since the November
meeting will focus on reviewing and recommending grant allocations for the fall grant cycle, it may be
better to invite Justin to the December meeting.
3. Meeting Minutes— Motion passed to approve the minutes of the September 8th meeting, with one edit
to add Hollie Adams to the Document Review Committee.
4. Financial Report—The financial report was accepted. It is noted that some expenses related to the
ARTober kick-off reception remain to be paid.
5. Grant Committee
a. MOVED by Commissioner Earley, SECONDED by Commissioner Bragg, and VOTED "to
remove the former rubric and to accept the guidelines for review of grant applications as
prepared by the grant committee." Committee members will review the four applications
received for the fall grant cycle and will schedule a meeting in the next two weeks if there are
any concerns or desire for more information from applicants.
6. Cultural Asset Committee
a. The committee met and selected Commissioner Greenlaw as committee chair. The committee
determined that it was not necessary to physically visit all public artifacts this year. The
committee is working on some edits and additions to the asset list. The committee is
considering some edits to the story boards.
7. ARTober Committee
a. The ARTober kick-off reception was not as well attended as the committee had hoped, partly
due to the Bangor Symphony performance the same afternoon. It was a good event with most
of the Bangor Arts award nominees in attendance. Rebecca Krupke was awarded the 2023
Bangor Arts Award; Penobscot Theatre hosted the event and Bangor Ballet dancers provided
entertainment. There was discussion as to whether the effort and expense for this event could
be better focused elsewhere. The committee will meet to discuss recommendations for 2024.
Commissioner Adams will prepare a press release about the award to be sent to the City for
distribution.
8. Adjourned at 9:06 AM.
