BANGOR SCHOOL COMMITTEE
REGULAR MEETING via ZOOM
FEBRUARY 24,2021
School Committee Members Present:Chair Carin Sychterz;Vice Chair Marwa Hassanien;
Warren Caruso;John Hiatt;Clare Mundell;Susan Sorg;and Timothy Surrette.
A.I &2.Chair Sychterz called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.and the Pledge of Allegiance
followed.A moment of silence was held to honor those who have passed away due
to COVID-19.
B.1.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg added the following to the agenda:
D.1.d.vote on the Request for Proposal that was submitted regarding inclusive
hiring search assistance for Superintendent,
E.1.c.a teacher nomination at Bangor Regional Program.As you may remember,
we had a mid-year resignation and were fortunate to find a qualified candidate to
fill that position.
VOTED 7-0 by roll call vote to approve the additions.
D.l.a.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg recommended approval of the request
from Bangor Parks and Rec Department to use Bangor Schools and fields for their
Summer Programs.Director Tracy Willette and Assistant Director Debbie
Gendreau were present to answer questions.
VOTED 7-0 by roil call vote to approve the request from Bangor Parks and Rec
Department to use Bangor Schools and fields for their Summer Programs.
D.I .b.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg recommended approval of the proposed
changes to the Bangor High School Social Studies and History Curriculum.
Principal Paul Butler and Department Chair Geoff Wingard were present to present
the changes and then answer questions.
VOTED 7-0 by roll call vote to approve the proposed changes to the Bangor High
School Social Studies and History Curriculum.
D.I .c.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg recommended approval of the adding AP
Research and AP Capstone to the Bangor High School course offerings.
VOTED 7-0 by roll call vote to approve adding AP Research and AP Capstone to
the Bangor High School course offerings.
D.I .d.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg shared the single Request for Proposal
submission by Lawrence Alexander II as the consultant for inclusive hiring search
assistant for the Superintendent.
VOTED 7-0 by roll call vote to accept the Request for Proposal submission by
Lawrence Alexander II as the consultant for inclusive hiring search assistant for the
Superintendent.
D.2.a.Director of Pupil Services.Patti Rapaport,and Director of Bangor Regional
Program,Christy Babin.provided an overview and update of the Southern
Penobscot Program for Children with Exceptionalities (SPRPCE).
D.2.b.Grant writer,Cathleen Hanclich Neslusan provided an update of grant work for the
2020-2021 school year.
E.l.a.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg recommended approval of the February
10,2021 Regular School Committee Meeting Minutes.
VOTED 7-0 by roll call vote to accept the February 10,2021 Regular School
Committee Meeting Minutes.
E.1.b.Interim Superintendent E-Iarris-Sinedberg recommended approval of the December
2020 Financial Report.
VOTED 7-0 by roll call vote to accept the December 2020 Financial Report.
Other As the meeting was nearing 10:30 p.m.Interim Superintendent Harris-Srnedberg
reminded the School Committee of Policy RD.which states School Committee
meetings,“shall conclude no later than 11:00 p.m.unless a majority of the
Committee members shall vote to continue to a later hour.The Chair shall call for
a vote of the Committee as soon after 10:30 p.m.as practicable if it appears that the
agenda will not be completed by 11:00 p.m.”
Chair Sychterz called for a vote to extend beyond the 11:00 p.m.time.
VOTED 4-3 by roll call vote in favor to extend the School Committee Meeting
beyond the 11:00 p.m.
In favor:Vice Chair Hassanien,Member Mundell,Member Surrette,and Chair
Sychterz.
Against:Member Caruso,Member Hiatt,and Member Sorg.
E.I .c.Interim Superintendent l-Iarris-Smedberg recommended approval of the following
teacher nomination for the 2020-2021 school year,with a one-year probationary
contract:
Courtney Rieder,Grade 2/3 Special Education Teacher.Bangor Regional
Program
E.1 .d.Member Hassanien shared the following donations:
To Downcast School from Bangor Savings Bank on Broadway:coats,boots,and
mittens having a total dollar value of $219.
VOTED 7-0 by roll call vote to approve the donation.Many thanks were offered.
F.1.Superintendent Search Update by Member Surrette.A timeline was shared and
dates set for liiture trainings and meetings for the Superintendent Search.
H.I.Chair Sychterz reviewed the upcoming dates.
J.VOTED 7-0 by roll call vote to adjourn at 10:53 p.m.
