HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-01-29 Recycling Committee Minutes Recycle Committee Minutes � January 29, 2003 � Members Present: Torvic Vardamis, John Eaton, Kerry Cox Recycling Staff-Arthur Stockus and Jerry Hughes Call To Order: Mr. Stockus called the meeting to order at 4:35 PM. The agenda for the meeting was � reviewed and approved as written Minute Approval: A motion was moved by John Eaton and seconded by Torvic Vardamis to accept the minutes from the September 22, 2002 Recycling Committee meeting. The motion passed and the minutes will be placed on file. Recycling Reports: Arthur Stockus reported that revenues for the month of December 2002 totaled$21,106. . This figure combined with revenues received year to date represent 61% of budget • projections. Avoided costs year to date total $38,038. Operating costs for the Processing Center year to date are$107,282.Market prices for recyclable materials have increased in recent months but are now leveling off. Total tonnage for recycled materials processed year to date is 2,441 tons. Advertising: This item was referred to the next agenda. Recycling Council Presentation General consensus of committee members is that John Hanson and Ed Barrett may do an educational presentation on the community channel. Details for this event have yet to be formulated. Review of Household I3azardous Waste Collection: Arthur Stockus passed out detailed spreadsheets that pertained to the household hazardous waste collection that was held on October 5,2002. The first spreadsheet related costs associated with the collection by each community involved. The second spreadsheet detailed the dispersal of grant funds to each community for CRT's/TV's, mercury products and Mercury lamps. The third spreadsheet outlined the adjusted billing to each community by ONYX after the grant funds had been deducted. � Arthur Stockus continued his report by explaining that a meeting with participating towns � had been conducted on January 27, 2003 and that Stetson had made preliminary plans to participate in the collection in 2003. It is expected that the household hazardous collection program may be able to accommodate up to twenty neighboring communities. Presently,with Stetson joining,we are now dealing with 17 towns including Bangor. Brainstorming Ways to Defend Recycling: The general consensus of the committee was that and educational program should be developed for inclusion on the community channel. This will be a continued agenda item. Recycling Mascot: The committee discussed various alternatives for a mascot that included revitalizing Binny. Another idea was to include the recycling poster students in the decision process in hopes that they could come up with a user-friendly mascot. The committee also discussed the fact that the new recycling truck with proper recycling logos could be utilized in designated parades. This item will also be a continued for discussion in future meetings.
