The first order of business was to elect a Committee Chair. Councilor Allen
was elected Chair and Mike Gilmore Vice Chair.
City Planner, Linda 7ohns and City Engineer, Frank Higgins from the City of
Brewer outlined planning and activity related to Brewer's watertront.
Brewer developed an overall improvement plan several years ago. They are
. proposing a waterfront train and have secured some easement rights. A
children's garden behind the former Public Works yard and the Dead River
property has been completed. A shoreline stabilization project is planned for
this year and will likely include some vertical bulkhead between the old
Pubtic Works yard and the Muddy Rudder. They hope to incorporate the
same railing system used in Bangor. Brewer's concept plan also includes an
open air theater, just upriver from I-395.
The Committee discussed the history of moorings in the Harbor and possible
interest in adding more moorings to attract visitors. Staff noted that annual
revenues generated by moorings have historically been much less than the
cost to provide them. Availability of moorings thru the private sector will be
explored.
The Committee also discussed the importance of marketing the Bangor
Waterfront and interest in improving our exposure. Seasonal boaters utilize
the Coastal Touring Guide as a source of information about amenities,
services, etc. The Committee is interested in efforts to improve marketing
and advertisement. It was noted that successful attraction of more visitors
. . will require facilities to accommodate them. Additional discussion included
ways to optimize utilization of existing dock space. r
Due to the length of the meeting, discussion of 2007 Docking Fees was
postponed to the next meeting. w
Harrison Clark indicated that due to other commitments, the Bangor Lions
Club will be unable to organize the Bangor Harbor Days Race in 2007.
Meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:45 p.m.
