HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-06-06 Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee Minutes • Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee Minutes of June 6, 2005 Members Present: Joshua Scroggins, James Russell, Richard Coffin, John Ryan Staff Present: Frank Comeau, Dennis Crane Director's Report: The Director reviewed the proposed Department Capital Expenditure Budget for FY 2006. He also noted that as it currently stands the part-time (20 hr. week) Senior Citizens Coordinator position will be eliminated from the budget. The Departmental budget for next year is up 2.3%. Summer Concerts on the waterFront will begin next Thursday, June 16t". The Bangor Band Concerts in the gazebo at Paul Bunyan Park will • begin on June 2gtn. The City Council has set the Dakin Pool fees to be the same as Pancoe Pool. The group working to save Dakin Pool is proposing to raise the funds to pay the pool monitor and is requesting that the fees be waived. The City Council will consider the request at their June 13t" meeting. Proqram Report: Youth Bowling with 59 youngsters participating concluded last month. Family Fun Lanes does a great job with the program. The annual Mother/Son Dance was held at the Civic Center on April 29t" with approximately 200 attending. Mighty Mite Soccer had 91 two to six-year- olds participating. University of Maine coach Scott Atherly and several of his players assisted with the program. Instructional T-Ball for five and six- year-olds had 31 participants. The Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race was very successful this year with 557 craft and 1,031 paddlers. Adult Softball, with about 50 teams, began play last month. There are about 750 adults participating in the league. � Minutes of June 6, 2005 Paqe 2• • Summer brochures were distributed to members. It was noted by member Scroggins that Cascade Park was not listed in the brochure. Summer staff training will begin tomorrow. Park Maintenance Report: Dennis Crane, Park Maintenance Supervisor, reported that his division is responsible for maintenance of Union Street Athletic Complex, Mansfield Stadium, Cameron Stadium, PAL Center, school athletic fields and the Parks & Rec Center. They mow over 400 acres of parkland and all school grounds. They also maintain all playgrounds, fountains, monuments, tennis and basketball courts, swimming pools and the skate park. Other responsibilities include building picnic tables and shelters, concert set-ups, brush trimming, maintaining park walkways and fencing. They also plant flowers in the parks and other areas around the community. Staff in this division also assists with many programs such as the canoe race and Soap Box Derby. • Meeting adjourned at 4:50 p.m. Next meeting scheduled for Monday, August 1, 2005 at 4:00 p.m. �
