HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-11-07 Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee Minutes • Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee Minutes of November 7, 2005 Members Present: Pamela Kropp, John Ryan Staff Present: Frank Comeau, Tracy Willette, )oe Nelson Director's Reuort: The committee reviewed the proposed Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Bangor and the Bangor Soccer Club without comment. The memorandum will go to the Government Operations Committee and on to the City Council for approval. � The Director told the committee that Hallie T ler a roached the Y PP Government Operations Committee with a request that the City establish an Off Leash Dog Park. A committee will be established to study the issue to establish the need for a dog park. If a need is established the committee will then find a location, design of the park, cost, and ways of funding such a park. The Dakin Pool Committee has been meeting regularly and will be exploring ways to generate volunteer labor next spring. It is hoped to have the design of the bath house done soon so that the committee can begin soliciting donated materials for the project. The City is taking steps to operate the pool next year in the event the new bath house is not ready. Public Works is expected to start working on cart paths at the golf course this week. They are also planning to pave the golf course parking lot next week. � � Advisory Minutes of November 7, 2005 Page two. Program Reuort: Nearly 400 children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 enjoyed another great season of soccer which concluded October 29t". Our annual Halloween Party with games, a costume contest and a haunted house was attended by approximately 400 children. There were about 100 entries for the Halloween Coloring Contest. Instructional Basketball for Grades K-2 began October 29�" with 75 participants. Little Reckees has 13 toddlers participating weekly. Pre-School Open Gym began October 31St. Adult Open Gym for Basketball and Volleyball began October 31St and November ist respectively. Sunday Open Gym for families and youth began November 6tn. Registrations are being accepted for a new program, Adult Co-Ed Dodgeball. This activity is becoming popular across the country, so Staff decided to see if there is interest in the community. Our Youth Basketball League for Grades 3-5 will hold . registrations on November 21St for boys and November 22"d for girls. Once again this year, the Department and the Bangor Noontime Kiwanis will sponsor the North Pole Calling Program for children in Grades K-2. Sawyer Arena Report: The Arena staff has been busy trying to wrap up Fall sports while operating the Arena. Currently, they are in the process of shutting down and winterizing Cameron Stadium, storing all soccer and football equipment and fertilizing athletic fields. The Arena opened for the season October 24t". The ice is in excellent condition this year, mainly because of the extra care taken by stafF preparing the base. Public Skating is offered Monday through Friday 12:30-1:30 p.m. and Sunday 4:00-5:30 p.m. Figure Skating is offered Monday through Friday 1:40-2:50 p.m. Stick& Puck is offered until November 18th from 3:00-4:00 p.m. for Bantams and older and 4:10-5:10 p.m. for Pee Wees and younger. � � Advisory Minutes of November 7, 2005 Page three. Bangor and 7ohn Bapst High Schools, and Foxcroft Academy play their home games at Sawyer. Bangor Youth Hockey is the largest user of ice time. Many area towns such as Orono, Old Town and Dover-Foxcroft no longer support town youth teams. They have combined to join the Penobscot Valley Hockey Club which reduces the overall need for ice time. The Penobscot Valley Figure Skating Club currently rents 2 �/z hours of ice time a week. Our Learn To Skate Program, under the direction of Katherine Perry, begins November 23'�. To date, there are 28 people registered for lessons. Bangor Youth Hockey has added a tournament this year, bringing the total to five tournaments at the Arena in March. • The University of Maine Hockey teams will rent practice time on several occasions this season. The skate sharpener that was purchased last year is fully automated and has proved to be a good source of revenue. Future plans for the Arena call for a new wireless remote scoreboard, a new P. A. System and a new Zamboni. At this time, there are no plans to meet in December. The next scheduled meeting is Monday, January 9, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. �
