HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-01-14 School Committee Minutes , MINUTES � BANGOR SCHOOL CbMMITTEE SPECIAL IvIEETING 7:0�0 p.m., I�onday, January 14, 2002 Abrahain Lincoln School School Cominittee Members present: Chairman Mat-tha Newman, Susan Carlisle, James Cox, George Eaton, and Ellen Tobin. Corrunittee Attorney Peter Lowe was present. Tl1e meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance followed. A. Committee Member Susan Carlisle moved to enter Executive Session to conduct a hearing regarding the expulsion of a student. Committee Member Ellen Tobin seconded � the motion. VOTED 5-0 by Roll Call Vote to enter Executive Session'to conduct a hearing regarding the expulsion of a student at 7:06 p.m. Committee Member Susan Carlisle moved to enter Public Session. The motion was seconded by Coinmittee Member Ellen Tobin. � VOTED 5-0 to enter Public Session at 7:46 p.m. . B. Committee Member Susan Carlisle stated the fmding and the resolution of the Bangor School Committee. The School Committee finds that: (l.) Student X* made a bomb threat oi1 December 17, 2001 at the William S. Cohen School; (2.) Student X's actions were an infraction of violence and he did act in a deliberately disobedient and deliberately disorderly manner; (3.) It is necessary for the peace and usefulness of the school to expel Student X. School Committee Member Ellen Tobin seconded the resolution . VOTED 5-0 to accept the resolution as read. The meeting was calied to order at '7:00 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance followed. A. 1. VOTED 7-0 to approve the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of December 17,2041. B: There were na audience comments or requests for information. C. There were no Commit�ee Reports. D. 1. Superintendent Ervin introduced The Challenger Space Centex, an initiative zn the carnmunity to develapment an intense space mission experience for middle grad.e students throughaut Maine. A review af the Challenger curriculum materzals indicates ma�.y points of integration with the curriculum of the Bangar Public Schaols, and he anticipated that the Challenger experience would become a cornrnon Iearning experience for fifth or six.th graders. He � introduced BiI1 Buckley, the driving force behind the development, and VWSCS teacher Kris � Reid who presented an averview af the project and answered questians. The Committee greeted the developrx�ent enthusiastically with Coz�nmittee Memi�er Get�rge Eaton noting the divine inspiration tt�.at Mr. Bucl�lay must have received. 2. The Superintendent reques�ed approval for trips tc� Quebec far French students from both the 3ames F. Doughty and William S. Cohen Scht�ol for Me�norial Day Weekend. V{�TED 7-0 to approve tl�e French trips ta Quebec as presented. E. The Superzntendent reccrmr�ended Seeand Readin�, and therefore approval, of Policies JGD, Suspensian, and JUE,Expulsion. V4TED 7-0 to grant Second Readin�to Policies 3GD, Suspension, and JGE, E�pulsion. F. There were no questions frorr�me�bers of the public. G.
