Request and Proposal from State of Maine Bureau of Health Immunization to Expand the City of Bangor's Immunization Program Representatives from the State Bureau of Health have recently proposed • expanding our current regional immunization program, which is _ _ _ _ __ _ __ • administered by the Health and Welfare Department. According to State officials, there is a growing need to provide immunization education and services for children throughout the State. The cities of Bangor and Portland have been approached about expanding their current services as the state has existing contracts and grant funding in place with each community. This may be an opportunity to expand our current program with an infusion of state grant money and no additional local cost. Health and Welfare Director Yardley prepared a background memorandum. The City currently receives an annual grant of $10,000 from the State to assist with this program. The State has now proposed expanding this program by adding a public health immunization educator in an effort to increase immunization rates in the five northern counties of Maine. The State has proposed increasing our grant by approximately $42,500 for the last quarter of this calendar year and to fund the grant at $100,000 for calendar year 2006. The 2005 funding will allow for hiring the educator, establishing an office, and acquiring necessary office equipment. There is no matching fund requirement to the City. A motion was made and seconded to approve staff's recommendation and to recommend approval to the City Council. The meeting adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
