iVlinutes:
Minutes from the May 18, 1994 meeting were accepted as written and will be placed on file.
Recycling Update:
Jerry Hughes provided the committee members with a detailed spread sheet that provided
figures for the month of May. Curbside collection and drop off of recyclables were included in the
report. Jim Ring asked specific questions regarding the figures and used the statistics for
newspapers during the month of May as an example to illustrate the structure of the spread sheet.
Jim also asked for specifics on operating costs and how these costs compared to the f1pri1 report.
Presently, Orono, rrington, Levan Castine, Frankfort; Hudson, Pleasant River, Steuben, .
Winterport, Deer Isle and Mt. Desert use Bangor"s facility. The town of Glenburn has recently
initiated a curbside collection program that will be on line in September of 94. At that time
Bangor's facility will be used to process those materials.
Recycling Center:
Paul spearing explained that the Recycling Facility continues to process more material and
that problems with contamination continue to exist, especially with glass which originates from
otlier communities. Jim Ring suggested that persons from parkl•icipating communities tour
Bangor's facility ta see how materiaLs are processed . During the tour persons would get a fust
hand look at what problems are associated with contamination. The Open House Ceremony that is
planned for September may provide an excellent opportunity for recycling tours which will
emphasize the praper preparaion of all recyclables.
Bangor Beautiful:
Arthur Stockus clarified the current structure of Bangor Beautiful. There will be a Bangor
Beautiful Board meefiing on June 17, 1994 which will.address a possible part time coordinator
position, finances, and the need for additional volunteerism.

: Model Cities Program:
Dick Unruh provided the committee with a detailed written outline that described how the
Bangor schooLs were implementing the criteria for model schooLs. An internal audit of the schools
waste stream will be accomplished this Fall with the assistance of Iathy Guerin. Presently, the
Bangor SchooLs are complying with many of the suggested requirements. For example, all of the
school facilities now have photocopying equipment with double-sided copying capability, supplies '
are being purchased in bulk and sitverware verses plastic utensils is a common practice. Dick also
helped to clarify the school's position on the Chewonki Foundation Curriculum for recycling and
mentioned that the curriculum may be offered in conjunction with other classes. Dick mentioned
that an appropriate time to discuss the curriculum with Superintendent Doughty will be in late
Su.mmer.
Ellen Moore explained that the current arrangement for the pickup of recyclables in the schooLs
is adequate. Collection of tin cans and cardboard is conveniently scheduled throuh Paul Spearing.
Jerry Hughes expressed his concern about future pickup scheduling for recyclables in the
schooLs, City Hall and City Hospital. Increased volumes of materiaLs which need to be sorted and
processed at the facility will at some time, prevent Pau1 Spearing from making continued pickups.
Jim Ring and Arthur Stockus suggested that Ted Corbett, the Motor Pool Director be approached
about the concept of using a surplus pickup truck for deliveries of recyclables to the facility. The
truck could possibly be shared by different departments. Details of driving assignments and
scheduled pickups would be fine tuned at a later date.
