RECYCLING COMMITTEE MINUTES
Committee Members Present: Arthur Stockus, Jim Ring, Kathy Guerin, Red
Hart and Theresa Audibert.
The meeting commenced with an overview of the August recycling totals:
TYPE CURBSIDE DROP-OFF
Glass 11 tons
Tin no figures
Newsprint 24 tons 13 tons
People are dropping off cardboard and clear plastic containers when no one
is around. We are storing them but we're not officially collecting them yet.
Grant's Trash, as broker for us, has offered to pay us $15/ton for loose
cardboard delivered to their site in Brewer. Therefore, we're stuffing it into
a packer and bringing it to Brewer. If we had a baler, it would be worth
more to us.
We've found a new market for glass contaminated with paper necks and tops.
We're now getting $40/ton - crushed. Our processing time is 4 times faster
snce we don't have tQ remove the conta.minants. 7Ve expect this new market
to be stable.
We may have an opportunity to drop off limited amounts of PET. We'd be
paid $.09/lb. for PET and $.04/lb. for HDPE 1 & 2 (unbaled).
We've received 2 or 3 contracts from Industrial Metals, agreeing to take all
of our tin or a percentage of the monthly average for a #2 bundle (including
light iron, white goods and tin cans). They would pay us $10.54/ton less

their transportation costs. After transportation, we would probably owe them
about $10/load. We haven't signed anything yet and they're continuing to
pick up for free.
Different methods of funding the purchase of a baler were discussed. We've
applied for Jobs Bond money. If that isn't approved, we could approach
Bangor businesses for help or host a black tie affair at the recycling center
to raise the money.
The Maine Marketing Cooperative was discussed. Community membership
costs $250/year plus $1.50/ton for all materiel processed trough them. 'hey
act as a broker. These rates don't include transportation. The fees we're
currently paying Sparks are higher. He's agreed to lower the fees so he's
competitive. Sparks is also offering us higher prices. So we're going to
continue to us Sparks for the time being.
This will be the last year we can use the landfill for leaf composting because
the DEP is closing it in December, 1992. After that, we will no longer have
a place to compost leaves.
Model Communi Program update: The City Manager has appointed an
tY
internal recycling committee, of which 7im Ring is a member, to bring city
government into compliance with the Model Community criteria. They've
had a few meetings and compiled a list of required and recommended
recycling activities. The School Department will be taking a similar proposal
to the School Committee.
