HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-10-27 Recycling Committee Minutes ..____�. ,_ ! � Recycling Com»rittee Meeting � October 27, 1998 Members Present: Arthur Stockus,Jerry Hughes,Dick Stockford,Ray Bolduc,Bill Phillips, John Hanson,Kathy Guerin Call To Order: The meeting was called#o or�ler at 6:00 PM by Arthur Stockas Minute Approval: The minutes fro�r the S��tznter 22, 1�98 meeting were approved as written and will be placed on file. Recycling Reports: Arthur Stockus explained the new format of the tracking report to committee members. It was suggested that year to date recycling tonnage figures be included in the report. Bill Phillips noted that recycling tonnage from outside communities had dropped slightly during the month of September. Recyciing revenues are at$8,400 or 34%of budget. Tipping fees have dropped to $54.82 per ton. Operating costs year to date total approximately$43,000 with labor and � � materials costs remaining fairly constant. Recycling Education: John Hanson expressed his concem about recycling education. John's belief is that recycling education in the schools is very unportant and that children are perhaps our greatest resource for promoting recycling. Dick Stockford suggested that a"Recycling Camp"could possibly be set up for designated studen#s_ The basic idea of the camp would be to educate students within the Bangor School systems ahout recycling. Different tasks or projects couid be used to reinforce the need to recycle. Kathy Guerin explained that education will be an important part of the America Recycles day that is scheduled for November 15, i998. Kathy will be making an attempt to go into the Bangor school systems on November 12 and 13 and will be conducted educational assemblies on recyclable materials. Educational recyclable materials will also be displayed at the America Recycles Day event that will ta.ke place at the Bangor Recycling Center on Sunday November 15, 1998 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 PM. Purchase of Compost and Recycling Sins: The purchase of the eompost and recycling bins was approved at the Finance Committee and _ City Council. Revenue needed for matching funds will come from remaining funds that were left , from the oil based paint collectian day. � i � Eco I3ag Update ��, Arthur Stockus explained that the Municipa.l Operations Committee had given permission to pursue the concept of using the Eco Bags for leaf coliection. Far leaf collection this year, residents will be strongly eneouraged to use the biodegradable Eco bag that can be purchased in local stores. Residents may p�ace their leaves in the familiar black plastic bag or rake their , Ieaves to the curb. The City may look into the possibility af providing the biodegradable Eco Bag ta citizens at na cl�aarge in the fu�ture if cost savings attributed to using the bag are ' substantiai. Paint Collection Day T'he OiI Based Paint Collection Day that was conduct�� on Sat�zrday O�tober�, 19°8 ivas a success. John Hanso�,Bill Philips,Ray Boiduc,Victor�a.Jusius,Arthur Stockus,3erry Hughes, George Clair,and Jerry Maynard participated in the event and had an enjoy�ble day. Paul Pattison,the president of Bangor Beautiful aiso offered his assist�n.ce. Eleven{11)55 gailon drums of oil based paint were collected totalling 60p gallons of paint. One lab pack of aerosol cans was also collected. S7°la of the participxttts that we�e i�tterviewed�etztic�ned that they had read about the paint collection day in the recycling newsletter. Recycting s�ff and committee members who participated in the even#agreed that sign age and traffic con#raI could be improved for future collection da.ys, � � Planning for Future Hazardous Waste Collection Days �. Cammittee members recommended that future coliection days continue and that mator oi1 and batteries would be twc�items that shc�uld be strongly considered for the ne�event. The ne� Hazardaus Waste Collection will be tentatively planned for the Fall of 1999.
