HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-09-26 City Council Minutes MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING BANGOR CITY COUNCIL—SEPTEMBER 26, 2022 Meeting Called to Order at 7.30 PM Chaired by Council Chair Fournier Councilors Absent:Dawes,Schaefer Meeting Adjourned at 9:00 PM RECOGNITION Recognized Anna Connors for Her Efforts for Parks and Recreation PROCLAMATION Proclaimed September 26—September 30,2022 as National Clean Energy Week PUBLIC COMMENT Pastor Terry Dinkins was very concerned with the homeless population, drug addiction and mental illness.He implored the City to take action now. Deborah Johnson,Bangor Democratic Committee,spoke on the need for affordable housing and the need for everyone to work together to find solutions before winter. Imke Jandreau felt there was a communication issue on what the City is doing and felt there needed to be a strategy to keep the citizens informed Amy Roeder was concerned with the rent increases of 30%and the inability for people to pay the increases resulting in more people being homeless. John King felt there was a mental health issue and pushing people from one area to another is not going to help. He felt the police needed to have more authority to get involved Elizabeth Milotowiczfelt criminalizing homelessness was not the solution. Robert Belliveau was against the approval of the liquor licenses on the agenda. Doug Dunbar would like to see the city prioritize the AR-PA money and create shelter villages. Larry Dansinger felt there needed to be a strategy for affordable housing and they needed to work with the people who do not have a place to live. Mike Tuller stated there was a crisis with homelessness and they needed to act now. Shannon Denbow felt the City needed to take homelessness seriously. Amber Young felt there needed to be another shelter and something needed to be done now. Stephen Brough agreed there was a communication issue making it seem like the Council doesn't care.
