HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-08-22 ProclamationPROCLAIMING AUGUST 31, 2022 AS OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY WHEREAS, The City of Bangor affirms and acknowledges the harm and hardship cause,4. by drug overdose; and WHEREAS, The City acknowledges the purpose of International Overdose Awareness Day as recognizing the work of local organizations saving lives, remembering loved ones lost to overdose, and ending the stigma of drug -related deaths; and WHEREAS, Health Equity Alliance (HEAL), the Together Place Peer Run Recovery Center, and Bangor Area Recovery Network (BARN), along with the City's Public Health and other Community entities, strive to reduce overdose death in the Greater Bangor Area; and WHEREAS, The City resolves to play our part in reducing the toll of overdoses in our community, which has claimed the lives of 105 overdose deaths in Penobscot County and 636 people in the State of Maine in 2021 with countless more lives affected forever; and WHEREAS, Naloxone helps revive people going through an op of overdose long enough for them to receive help-, and WHEREAS, The City encourages our citizens to obtain training on preventing, identifying and responding to an opioid overdose with Naloxone; and WHEREAS, The City affirms that the people affected by overdose are our children, parents, family, friends, and community members, deserving of our love, compassion, and support. NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Richard L. Fournier 11, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of tl" City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim August 31111, 2022, as Overdose Awareness Day in the City of Bangor to raise awareness of the tragedy of overdose deaths i1r the community.
