HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-03-04 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes COMMISSION ON CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT Friday, March 4, 2022 – 8:30 am City Hall Council Chambers and via Zoom MEETING MINUTES Commissioners Present: Adams, Bragg, Filipiak, Greenlaw, Malia, McDade, McGill, Rieley (Zoom),Smith,K.,Smith,S. Staff Present: Bickford (Zoom), Emery Vice Chair McDade called the meeting to order at 8:32 A.M. 1. Welcome 2. Approval of minutes ofFebruary 18, 2022 meeting – Commissioner McGill moved approval, seconded by Commissioner Filipiak. Vote unless doubted, no doubt. 3. Report ofStaff Financial report - No changes, $11,116 available for rest of FY ‘22, including next grant round Budget request for FY2023 (draft attached) $15,000 standard request for grants. Discussed additional $5,000 in support of ARTober o ARTober kickoff/celebration event will be hosted at the Zillman Museum (space presumably donated) o Format: reception with mini-performances; cash bar; hors d’oeuvres to be catered o Council would want a general idea of what will be different to justify the funding request of $5,000 and would not be receptive to spending on food. Funds would be applied to: Stipends for performers/artists Development of printed materials with designs by local artists (stipend provided) Publicity, social media, etc Meeting turned over to Chair Bragg at 8:41 a.m. • Vice Chair McDade moved approval of the request for additional $5,000 for ARTober, seconded by Commissioner Filipiak. Roll call vote; all members were in agreement, motion carried. 4. Report ofChair Notedthat February 2022 minutes didnot reflect that Commissioner Filipiak is continuing as chair of Assets Committee Chair Bragg reached out to Josh Gass and Brian Hinrichs regarding the change in dates for grant cycles – email to go out to Creative Leaders’ network. 5. Committee Reports Grant Committee a. Itisnotedthat the timeline has changed on website, press release ready to go out today. b. Once posted on City website, if all Commissioners share the posts to their networks, also direct emailing. CulturalAsset Committee a. As noted at February meeting, the committee will meet quarterly, nothing to report at this time. ARTober Committee a. Willbe meeting afterfull CCD meeting, nothing to report at this time. 6. Questions from Commissioners/Open Discussion Status of Gomez Monument – City to work with Wabanaki Organization to design appropriate replacement; when they are ready, work would begin. City Staff will reach back out to Ambassador Dana to reinitiate process. Commissioners would like to hear from City Council what their priorities are and if they can provide any guidelines to the Cultural Commission - Commissioner Filipiak will reach out to Councilor Yacoubagha regarding her role with the Commission. Designated communications committee discussed • ARTober Facebook page, Instagram – potential rebranding of site – BangorArts • Commissioner S. Smith willing to assist with communications as needed. May not need separate communications committee if subcommittees add marketing as part of duties • Engaging with Downtown Bangor Partnership (DBP).Commissioner Filipiak will be able to take a more active role within DBP once her business relocates to Harlow Street where she would be in the Downtown Development District. How mightKingFoundation be involved? Wasonhiatus; Has started to ramp backup - Would they support an “artist in residence” program? Whatisavailableforvenuesand/orpartnerships?Networking opportunities? Might the CCD be utilized to make Bangor known as a center for the arts. Some ideas: • Create a creative incubator within the City. • Establish a Bangor Poet Laureate (honorary title) - need to gauge interest of the council before moving forward. Ask for applications or nominations? Commissioners encouraged to send any agenda items to Staff for addition in next Cultural Commission agenda. 7.
