CITI RK IN CITY COUNCIL Dec. 28, 1964 Taken from table, PASSED Bangor, the renter of Maine ---the Gateway to Maines North Woods and Seashore Resorts 494 of Pte, Ad= PLANNING December DEPARTMENT21,1964 TO: The Honorable City Council FROM: The Planning Board IN RE: change from Residence ^G^ Zone to General Business Zone a portion of land n the west side of Union Street the area bounded on the mouth by Inter- state Highway No. 95; on the east by the westerly sideline of Union Street; mn the north and west by land of U.S. Air Force and land now or formerly of urrey. Steps Please be advised that the Planning Board has held a public bearing and given careful consideration to the above request. The Planning Board Members felt that: 1. This was taking land zoned for residential use, 2. The 95 Interchange would create traffic hazards on the residential streets and increase traffic volume in the area, 3. Noted the strong apposition by residents, 4. The lack of specific site control was a disadvantage if this were approved as a General Business area, S. It may have an adverse affect on the downtown development. Considering these factors the Planning Board voted to deny the request. Respectfully submitted. Carl J. As a long term resident oP 768 Union Street ( 19 years this caning November) I an strongly opposed to the proposal you are considering this evening that the residential honing of our family neighborhood be changed to a commercial category. I refer specifically to the proposal that the large tract of land running along the Easterly side of Union Street from the Interstate MOIRA, right up to our property be removed Prom residential sorung restrictions by sae type of machan'i z each as spot homing And be converted to colmserelal use in the form of another Shopping Center. To allmr the construction of Each An enterprise atoll be disastrous to the homeawers of this entire neighborhood and in my opinion a poor and abort -sighted policy on the part a the City of Bangor. The deleterious effects scald be neap And scald include the following: A coameroiallaina and cheapening of the entire Trion St. area with old residents leaving and new hometown denied access to benesites. An overereading of streets and outs and entrances to the Interstate Highway and Union Street, further c0mmanding the load of AS already bwdemome Bow traffic. A lase in city Lex revenue if the area were conmereialised as proposed and eat developed entirely for homes and All the textile property which the ente.l. Unnecessary and harmful competition to the already too navy slapping centers, chain stores, down tow businesses, ate. with which we are Presently blessed. A direct blow to the prowlgation of down -tow wbau renewal projects. The establishment of a form of business Eiuch is eat in shanty creative by mines in producing, making, growing goads and services cint which would be purely Parasitical. It is sip opinion that if the present owes, or subsequent overs, of the land in question will sell prospevtive home -0=81`5 lets With sufflaient frontage And depth,at reasonable prices, to deka attractive homes and a pleasant evviroIDnevt, all of the land will be disposed of, a fine neighborhood of h®a`mmecs established, end good wall come to the people of this area. high LA_e//]Lv"cSmith Ye the una.rtl.gued are opposed to tbs aavatug of 16IIon 9Exeet ea. /,yqy/yI isthe8"ov®bbeer i'!th issue of[t/h—a ngox Deily mews lit Im CA, 'ppri/rir+z- q7.2c 3if 5y Aa the undersigned are opposed to the rezoning of Hn46n Y. lest ea propoaed in the Novvmber 17th issue of the Hangar Dally Nevar a , or s fir,, , o,- J? anao f puw✓i.- ti'aJi ( O4 y%— ilg-.. `r fop / / Ns the undersigned are oppased to the reaming of Dalm Street as pio— posed in the November 17th issue of the Bangor Deily News, p ..
