By EM City Connell ofpw 64 ofBaw ; ORDERED, TUT the attached petition from occupants of property on Columbia Street to erect improved street lighting, is hereby received. RECEIVED 1968 CCT 20 AX 8:19 CITY CLERK'S OFFICE 'ITY PC P-N"p. MAINE IN CITY COUNCIL Det. 24, 1966 PASSED 11i K 236-T ORDER Title, Accept, pg, Petition,,. Columbia St. ...................................... Introduced and filed by owcilman Mr. Norman Minsky Gross, Minsky & Mogul 84 Harlow Street Bangor, Maine Dear Norm Enclosed is a petition signed by property owners and storekeepers who are located on Columbia Street requesting that the City investigate the possibility of having more powerful lighting on Columbia Street. About a year ago, 00 Halloween Eve to be exact, two young men who apparently were intoxicatedsmashed the plate glass window in the Charles E. Locke Company at 42 Columbia Street. This Cost Henry Sutcliffe Cee the sum of $175.00. About two weeks ago someone broke a pane of glass in our Cross Street entrance and threw • mail box through the window of Armes, Inc. at 46-48 Columbia Street. The cost of this will be much more than $175.00. About a week after this last episode, someone broke a pane of glass in the door of the entrance to the Knit Nook operated by Fred A. Tuck at 72 Columbia Street. This again will cost Mr. Coe a considerable amount. We realize that vandalism is not an easy thing to control, but we, as property owners and storekeepers on Columbia Street, are most perturbed at the apparent increase in this type of crime. We would welcome suggestions from the Safety Committee, the police and anyone else as to what can be done to prevent vandalism. Chief Small informed me that he believes that in the majority of cases where there is powerful lighting there is a decrease in the acts of vandalism. We urge your Committee, and the proper officials to give full consideration to increasing the power of the lighting on Columbia Street and/or installing more lights. Your cooperation in this matter has been a pleasure and we await with eagerness the decision of the Committee, since, as you are well aware, Halloween Eve will be with us very soon and this seems to be the time when many acts of ,.,..-.1,.......w.
