Many departments of our city are presently utilizing at great benefit the results of electronic tabulating equipment. Our experience with this kind of equipment has been highly satisfactory and we have reason to believe that some of the testimony before your committee in objection to Its use for election purposes was greatly exaggerated. It is recognized, nevertheless, that in any change from manual to mechanized operations aumber of unforeseen problems may arise. It should be emphasized, however, ithat other communities outside a Maine have used electronic voting equipment with a high degree of success. If your committee feels in its judgement that general use of this kind of equipment is not advisable at this time, it is hoped that at least a pilot project will be approved for the purpose of Indicating the relative values of various alternative equipment. Committee on Election Laws -2- April 10, 1967 Electronic voting equipment has the potential to show great savings In capital and operating costs to the municipalities of Maine as well as substantial savings in time. The City of Bangor has the experience and confidence in this kind of equipment to suggest that our city be designated for a pilot project If this alternative becomes necessary. We hope your committee will not refuse to the people of the state a relatively inexpensive way to greatly Improve our vote counting procedures. We would appreciate an opportunity at your convenience to discuss this communication more fully If your body deems it advisable. Very truly yours, 0w-G 170J 1d Merle F. Goff CITY MANAGER MFG/hp
