Introduced and filed by e Co amen pS6•] ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF SEWAGE TREATMENT DEFINITION This is a responsible technical position involving the operation of ss wage treatment plants and other related facilities, including pumpstations, regulating chambers, and other devices related to the transportation and treatment Of sanitary sewage. An employee in this position will be under the direct super- vision of the Superintendent of Sewage Treatment and shall have the ability to act in his absence to perform all required duties in the operation of the plant. He shall follow the directions of the Superintendent Of Sewage Treatment but shall also be required to make independent decisions when so required, and to direct and supervise subordi- nates in the plant operation. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (This position mvnot include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in this position.) Shall be able to perform required labora.ory tests and to prepare related reports regarding operations and tests. Shall check the operation of all equipment and shall adjust, as required for best operation, the following equipment: valves, pumps, sludge collectors, grit disposal, sludge concen- tration tank, vacuum filters, and other related equipment. Shall advise the Superintendent and Mechanic -Instrument Man of equipment which is not Operating and arrange for its proper repair. Shall insure that proper schedules of equipment, plant, and ground maintenance are carried out. DESIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Shall have a working knowledge of sswage treatment, includ- ing the equipment for the transportation and treatment of sewage. Shall have the ability.: to write reports and to conduct laboratory tests. Shall have the ability to train and supervise the Mechanic - Operators in the operation and maintenance of equipment. DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING Shall have a High School education or equivalent and shall have at least sr months training or two years practical exper- ienctreatment plant operation and related laboratory testing• 410 SUPERINTENDENT OF SEWAGE TREATMENT DEFINITION This is advanced technical and administrative work in the supervision and operation of the sewage treatment plants,. pump stations, regulating chambers, and other mechanical devices related to the conveyance and the treatment of sanitary sewage. The employee in this class is responsible for the proper functioning, operation, and maintenance of the sewerage facilities, including the overseeing and control of plant mechanics and opera- tors and the direct responsibility for the operation of the testing laboratories. The duties require a high degree of independent judgment and knowledge of sewage treatment. E% LES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED (This position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in this position.) Supervises the work of subordinates in the operation of the plant, including the proper maintenance of all equipment within the plant. Insures that all necessary supplies and chemicals are avail- able a may be required for the treatment of the sewage. Directly responsible for making all laboratory tests as may he required by the Water Improvement Courmission of the State of Maine, and to insure that all reports Of such tests are completed and submitted as may be required. Shall have a complete working knowledge of all plant equip- ment, including valves, pumps, motors, filters, piping, and con- trols. Shall insure that proper work schedules and maintenance pro- grams are established and carried out. DESIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of the techniques of sewage treatment and treat- ment plant operation. The knowledge of required laboratory tests. Ability to train subordinates in the proper use of equipment in the making of tests. The ability to establish and maintain accounts and simple bookkeeping records. SUPERINTENDENT OF SEWAGE TREATMENT (Cont 'd) DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING Shall have a High School education or equivalent and at least one year of specialized training in sewage. treatment plant operation, laboratory testing and plant management. 526 MECHANIC -OPERATOR DEFINITION This is semi -skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment related to sewage treatment plants, pump stations, regulating chambers, and other appurtenances relative to the transportation and treatment of sewage. The employee in this class shall be under the direct super- vision of the Maintenance Mechanic and Instrcment Man, and, a ar result of proper training, will become familiar with the duties of the Assistant Superintendent of Sewage Treatment and the Maintenance Mechanic and Instrument Man, and, in their absence, each most be capable of independent decisions regarding the operation and maintenance of the plant. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (My one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Operates the vacuum um filters, including mixing and diluting the conditioning feedchemicals, computing feed doses, and ad- justing the sludge flow to the vacuum filters, and adjusting the level of sludge in filter vat, adjusting filtrate pumps, adjust- ing speed of vacuum filtered drum and cleaning of filter equip- ment after each run. Shall maintain equipment, plants, and grounds of all of the above-listedfacilities. Shall operate the sludge disposal truck between the sewage treatment plants, pump stations, and disposal areas. Shall periodically investigate, examine, and apply prevent- tative maintenance to the various plants, punp stations, and other equipment. DESIRED XNOWLEDGES, SKILLS. AND ABILITIES Shall have a knowledge of the use of corvaon hand tools and equipment. The ability to learn the maintenance and operation of sewage treatment equipment. The ability to take samples and assist in laboratory testing. The ability to recognize the proper junctioning of plant equipment and to make independent decisions regarding such operation. DESIRABLE EKPERIENCE AND TRAINING High School education or equivalent training and experience, with the ability to learn and understand the operation and main- tenance of sewage treatment plant and pump s_ation equipment. 528 MAINTENANCE MECHANIC AND INSTRUMENT MAN DEFINITION This is a technical position involving the maintenance of all equipment, instruments, plants, and grounds related to the transportation and treatment of sanitary sewage, including treatment plants, pump stations, regulators, and other related Overage facilities. Work includes the direct supervision of two Mechanic -Operators, and the maintenance of equipment. He shall be under the direct supervision of the Superin- tendent of Sewage Treatment or the Assistant Superintendent of Sewage Treatment. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (This position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all tasks. which may be found in this position.) He shall insure that .proper maintenance schedules are carried out for all equipment. Shall be familiar with the proper functioning, preventative maintenance, and corrective action required for the proper opera- tion of all equipment. Shall train and supervise the Mechanic -Operators in the functioning of equipment. He must have the ability to perform Operators' duties in addition to his own specific duties. Shall have the ability to make independent decisions on operation and maintenance. DESIRED KNOWLEDGES. SKILLS. AND ABILITIES Shall have ansiderable knowledge of practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the plumbing, electrical, and related mechanical trades. Shall have a general knowledge of the operation and main- tenance n-tenance of sewage treatment plants, pump stations, and other related facilities. Ability to perform skilled mechanical repair tasks indepen- dently and to detect defects in equipment. Shall have skill in the use of machine, welding, acetylene, and related mechanical tools and equipment. The ability to work from sketches and blueprints. Ability to supervise semi -skilled subordinates in mechani- cal maintenance and repair work. kAINTENANCE MECHANIC AND INSTRUMENT NAN (Cont'd) DESIRAELE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING High School education or equivalent and considerable experience as a mechanic, pipe fitter, machinist and/or other related mechanical work. -
