HomeMy WebLinkAbout1969-01-27 74-W RESOLVE7a -W introduced by councilor McKay, January 27, 1969 CITY OF BANGOR (TITLE) Poolvef Re. 9.mm 4ta3 trjme cspttol and Safe ._Satreet. .Act ,f 1960" By aw Caumdt alike aV ofeanyor: R LVSD, WHEREAS, Congress of the United States finds that the high incident of crime threatens the peace, security, and general welfare of the NationacM its citizens, and WHEREAS, Congress suggests that in order to prevent crime and to insure the greater safety of the people, that law enforcement efforts mist be better coordi- nated and intensified and made more effective at all levels of government, and WHEREAS, Congress finds further that c essentially a local problem that east be dealt with by State and local goverments if it is to be controlled ef- fectively, and WHEREAS, Congress of the United States anacted i .lune 196E The "Cmmibus Clime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968" which provides funds for law enforce- ment planning and action programs and has extended to the State of Maine a planning grant of $165,935, and WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of Maine has established by Executive Order under the standards set forth in the act the Maine Law Enforcement Planni and Assistance Agency to entry out the duties and responsibilities imposed upon state planning agency by virtue of the act, and WHEREAS, Section 202 of the "Omnibus crime Control and Safe Streets Act Of 1968" re- quires that at least forty percent of said state planning grant be made available to units of general local government or combinations thereof, and WHEREAS, such amount directed to units of local government amounts to slightly iex- Cass of $66,000 and if apportioned among 400 units of local government i Maine would not provide adequate funds to any one community which would allow for the preparation and development of a meaningful and conprebensive law enforcement plan which would meet the needs of the community and its neighbor NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Bangor joins with other communities throughout the State innes supporting the concept that local government plan- ing Seer amely in the amount of $66,000 not be apportioned in a which inhibits the development of a desirable, coordinated and comprehen- sive sive law enforcement plan, and BE IT FURTHER ABSOLVED that the City of Bangor records its support of the proposal of allowing said local government planning funds to be directed to the Maine Law Enforcement Council, through our representative organization, the Maine Municipal Association. dl v'1 "—;VED !069 JAN 23 [�i 3: 46 VT' C: LM S OFFICE IN CITY COUNCIL Jan. 27. 1969 PASSED NE SOL VE RE_ 'omnibus Crime Control s Safe Streets Set Of 1968"
