Commission on Cultural Development

Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 8:32AM with the following in attendance: Jane Bragg, Amy Roeder,
Tristan Greenlaw, Christina Berube, Mary Donovan, Barbara McDade, Aubrae Filipiak, Kevin Smith,
Marge McGill, Betsy Lundy (City Staff)
Minutes of the August meeting were approved on a roll call vote.

Deaccession of Gomez Monument
The committee has reached out to stakeholders through public notices. Public commentary is invited at all
meetings. Commentary received to date has been reviewed with a majority in favor of alteration or
removal of the monument. Next meetings September 17 and 30 at 9:00 am
Grants
The committee finalized its mission statement and goals and objectives statement. The November Grant
cycle will be promoted in the following (and other) ways: ARTober website and facebook page, email
reminder from the City (Betsy) to approximately 100 arts organizations and individuals. Commissioners
are encouraged to and share facebook posts and reach out individually in person and on social
media. Next meeting September 9 at 4:00
Cultural Assets
The to Story Map is essentially complete. Tristan will send the link to commissioners
for review and feedback. Story Map information may be included in ARTober publicity and shared with
the CVB. Work is underway on the Second Story Map to Do in A third story map will
be designed with children ages 9 - 15 in mind. Kevin will create a survey to determine what would be of
interest to this age group. The survey will be reviewed by Zeth Lundy prior to distribution. The raw
survey data will be reviewed for accuracy and accessibility. It was suggested to reach out to DownEast
Magazine for a possible spring article after the second Story Map is completed. Next Meeting
September 18 at 8:30
ARTober
ARTober will be virtual this year and will be divided into 4 major areas: Performing Arts, Visual Arts,
Music, and The Written Word with each area the focus of one of the four weeks of October.
Commissioners are encouraged to LIKE and SHARE on facebook and to share with Christina any
information on October activities, virtual or in person. The participation form has been updated and
circulated and will be shared with the DBA. A press release has gone out and banners go up the second
week of September. Christina will join Betsy on her next Wednesday spot (4:15 - 4:30) with Rich
Kimball. Commissioners are encouraged to follow ARTober on facebook and and Change Default setting
to SEE FIRST.

Upcoming Events Shared:
Virtual opening of exhibit by Joanne Houlsen at Top of the Nine,
Library is looking for hosts for Suffrage exhibit throughout downtown,
Downtown Business Partnership flag making project will be hung in West Market Square
Local improv will perform live in at the BAE on September 18
The meeting was adjourned at 9:18am on a motion by Tristan Greenlaw with second by Barbara McDade.
