HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-11-06 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes City of Bangor Commission on Cultural Development Meeting via Zoom November 6, 2020 Minutes The November 6, 2020 meeting of the Commission on Cultural Development was called to order at 8:32 am with the following members present: Jane Bragg, Marge McGill, Barbara McDade, Tristan Greenlaw, Kevin Smith, Christina Berube, Aubrae Filipiak and Betsy Lundy (City Staff liaison) APPROVED unanimously by roll call vote a motion by Barbara McDade with second by Kevin Smith to the minutes of the October 3 Gomez update: The City Council accepted the recommendation to deaccession the Gomez monument and to transfer the upright portion of the monument to the Bangor Historical Society. There was consensus that the Gomez committee remain in existence in order to assist the city in determining next actions related to creation of a new piece of art which will celebrate the history and contributions of indigenous people. It is noted that a request for funding to be included in the next budget may be in order. Betsy suggested that the committee prepare a memo to be sent to the Economic and Development Committee stating that the Commission would like to put together a plan to create such a monument and that this project be included in the Comm five year plan. The Goals and Objectives of the ARTober, Cultural Asset and Grant committees were discussed. Committees are asked to revise statements so that they can be voted on at the December Commission meeting and included in the Annual Report. All committees are asked to include statements of inclusivity and diversity. Grant Committee - There are two requests in the current cycle to be considered at the December meeting. It was the consensus of the Commission that the letter drafted by the committee proposing discontinuance of the rubric be set aside at this time and that the wording and format of the rubric be reworded. It was suggested that an accountability clause be included in the goals and objectives statements with time frames specified. Cultural Asset Committee - Raw data from the cultural survey is currently under review. Tristan volunteered to oversee any public input regarding cultural assets. Betsy will arrange a press release about the release of the first story map. ARTober Committee - Barbara reported that much was learned from the efforts to mount a virtual ARTober this year. The website and FaceBook pages created for 2020 will remain active and plans are beginning for a month long festival in 2021. The meeting was adjourned at 9:33am on a motion by Kevin Smith with second by Barbara McDade.
