Blake House, Samuel Farrar House, Godfrey -Kellogg House, Morse and Company Office Building, Morse Covered Bridge and Zebulon Smith Houeea St. John's Catholic Church The proposed designations amending Chapter VII, Article 4, Section 5.3 of the Ordinance of the City of Bangor w considered at a public hearing of the Historic Preservation Commission on May 4.1977 The structures involved in these desigaetions are briefly described below. With the exception of the Blake House and St. John's Catholic Dhurch, the. Cwrucisslon recommends their immediate designation. _ Adams -Pickering, Klock, Mein Street (Sleeper's), designed by the Bangor architect, Geroge W. Orff in 1$71, is one of the n1.. elegant mansard business blocks in the area. William A. Blake House, 103 Court Street (Prentiss & Carlisle). The Commission now recommends that this designation be-dtmd .e... -• OMf-e-= Samuel Farrar House, 123 Court Street (Pentecostal Church). Recent r eearch by Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. has shown that this house should really be called the Nathaniel Hatch House. Built from designs by the remove Bangor architect, Charles C. Bryant, in 1832, it is one of the finest and earliest temple -style Greek Revival houses in Maine. (Originally it had aeand portico at the rear, destroyed by its conversion into a church). The addition at the left of the house was designed by soother notable architect, Isaiah Rogers, designer of Boston's Tremont House. Godfrey -Kellogg House (Cliff Cottage), 212-222 Ransacking Avenue. This Cattle Revival complex of buildings, with the original Gothic Revival doghouse, is one of the most inventive and beautifully scaled Gothic houses in America. The architect remains unmown - Morse and Cam env Office Building, (Leighton Agency) 455 Harlow Street, a delightful Colonial Aevral structure m which the woodworking capacities of the famous Morse Hill are exhibited in a bravura display of trim. It sea designed by Wilfred E. Mansur in 1895- Morse Covered Bridge. One of the few remaining covered bridges in the state, the Mcrae Covered Bridge was the subject of a,, earlier successful drive in the commupity towards historic preservation. Historical industrial buildings and engineering structures, such as bridges and viaducts, are equally worthy, with residences, churches and buildings blacks, of. Resignation. St. John's Catholic Church. The Commission requests that the Council table indefinitely the designation of St. John's Catholic Church. This designation will be brought back to the Council later in the Summer. Zebulon Smith House, 55 Summer Street. One of the oldest (1823) temple - fronted, Greek Revival, houses in Maine, this house retains some of the stylistic features of earlier Federal style. It i worthy Of designation because of this early date and transitional character, its interesting proportions, scale and combination of brick and clapboard, and as an example of the temple -fronted farm, which i otherwise rare in Bangor (the Nathanial Hatch House is the only other good example).
