TO: Report to the City Councilors, City of Bangor
FRDM: Historic preservation Commission
SUBJECT: Reference: Designation of the Bangor House as a Historic landmark
Des£gstlpn of the Wheelwright Bock as a Historic landmark
The Historic preservation Commission rends the designation of anAy
the landmarks listed above. This r endation is based on the Commission's
careful study of these structures initiated in late
January, 1997. Applications we duly received for these designations under
Chapter VII, Article 4, Section 5, and copies are attached to this repack.
Following the discussion of the merits of these sites, and visits to the
sites where required, written application was
made to Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr.,
E Director of the Maine Historic preservation Commission for his r a
ew, as
r
required by Section 4.1. All w approved for designation by Mr.Shettleworth,
and a public hearing was held on April 27, 1979. The Commission heard n
objection to the proposed designations, and therefore recommends their design-
ation under Section 5.3 (Bangor House and Wheelwright Block). Brief descriptions
follow of the historical and architectural significance of each proposed
designation.
Bangor House. Closely modeled after Barren's Tremont House (1828-29) the
first modern hotel in America, the Bangor House was designed by Bangor architect
Charles G. Bryant and built by Lyman Seaver in 1833-34. It is one of the last
remaining "palace hotels" on the nation and an outstanding work of Greek Revival
style. It filled an important social need for the i ingly prosperous and
cosmopolitan lumber capital of the world, and was the scene over the years o
many notable political events. Though successiveadditions have somewhat changed
its original shape, its 'elegant form and decorations remain an important fecal
point for the city center.
Wheelwright Block. The Wheelwright Mock was designed by the local architects,
Benjamin S. Deane and Edwin Lee Brown, in 1859• It was the first Second Empire
business block built in Main a and is probably themost beautiful one in the
state. Relatively unaltered above the first floor, the window treatment i
especially fine. The Wheelwright Block is probably the single mosVimportant
element of visual distinction in the downtown area
of Burger, and every attempt
.should be made to find a viable use for which it can be thoroughly rehabilitated.
If it were demolished, much of the visual coherence and quality of the neighbor-
ing parts of Mein,. Broad and Hammond Streets would disappear.
