TO: Report to the City Councilors, City of Ba:gor
FROM: Historic preservation Commission
SUBJECT: Reference: Designation of the Bangor House as a Historic Landmark
Designation of the Wheelwright Bock as a Historic Landmark
The Historic preservation Commission recommends the designation of aeft
the landmarks listed above. This recommendation is based on the Commission's
careful study of these structures ar.e--t9.a ,
,, - initiated in late
r
January, 1977. Applications were duly received these designations under
Chapter VII, Article 4, Section5, and copies are attached to this report.
Following the discussion of the merits of these sites, and visits to the
sites where required, written application was made to Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr.,
fe ;,s Director of the Maine Historic preservation Commission for his reiew, as
/ required by Section 4.1. All w approved for designation by Hr..
rShettleworth,
and a public hearing was held on April 27, 1977. The Commission heard n
objection to the proposed designations, and therefore recommends their design-
ation under section 5.3 (Decker Mouse and wheelwright Block). Brief descriptions
follow of the historical and architectural significance of each proposed
designation.
Bangor House. Closely modeled after Boston's Tremont House (1828-29) the
first modern hotel in America, the Bangor House was designed by Bangor architect
Charles G. Bryant and built by Lyman seavey in 1833-34. It is one of the last
remaining "palace botels" on the nation and a outstanding work of Greek Revival
style. It filled animportant s c
social need the increasingly prosperous and
cosmopolitan lumber capital of the world, and was the scene over the years o
any notable political events. Though successive additions have somewhat changed
its original shape, its "elegant form and decorations remain an important focal
point for the city center.
Wheelwright Block. The wheelwright Block was designed by the local architects,
Benjamin 5. Deane and Edwin Lee Brown, in 1859• It was the first Second Empire
business black built in Main a and is probably themost beautiful one n the
state. Relatively unaltered above the fist floor, the window treatment i
especially fine. The wheelwright Block is probably the single meat/important
element of visual distinction in the downtown area of Hangar, and every attempt
should be made to find a viable use for which it can be thoroughly rehabilitated.
If it were demolished, much of the visual coherence and quality of the neighbor-
ing parts of Main,. Broad andSeawardStreets would disappear.
The Commission is requesting that the Council postpone further action upon
designation of the Broadway District and the Btandnine District. It :dos
EB e y yecided at the public Hearing that these districts should be r Considered
and that some alterations should be name in their boundaries. s
