TC: Report to the City Councilors, City of Bangor
FMM: Historic Preservation Commission
SUBJECT: Reference: Designation of the Bangor House as a Historic Landmark
Designation of the Wheelwright bock as a Historic landmark
The Historic Preservation Commission recommends the designation of ealy
the Landmarks listed above. This recommendation is based on the Commission's
careful study of these structures asu ¢ initiated in late
January, 1977. Applications were duly received for these designations under
Chapter VII, Article 4, Section 5, and copies are
attached to this report.
Fallowing the discussion of the merits of these sites, and visits to the
sites where required, mitten application was made to Berle G. ghettleworth, Sr.,
Director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission for his r
a
& ' ` J,e" required by Section 4.1. All were approved for designation by Mr.Shettleworth,
ew, as
/ and a public hearing was held on April 27, 1977. The Commission heard no
objectionto the proposed designations, and therefore recommends their design-
ation under Section 5.3 (Bangor House and wheelwright Block). Brief descriptions
follow of the historical and architectural significance of each proposed
designation.
Bangor House. Closely modeled after H aton's Tremont House (1828-29) the
first modern hotel in America, the Bangor House was designed by Bangor architect
Charles G. Bryant and built by Lyman wavey in 1833-34. It is one of the last
remaining "palace hotels" on the action and an outstanding work of Greek Revival
style. It filled animportant s c
social need for the increasingly prosperous and
cosmopolitan lumber capital of the world, and was the scene over the years o
many notable political events. Though successive additions Have somewhat charges
its original shape, its elegant form and decorations remain an important focal
point for the city center.
wheelwright Block. The Wheelwright Mock was designed by the local architects,
Benjamin S. Deane and Edwin Ire Brown, in 1859• It was the first Second Empire
business block built in Main a and is probably themost beautiful one in the
state. Relatively unaltered above the first floor, the window treatment i
especially fine. The Wheelwright Block is probably the single most/important
element of visual distinction in the downtown areof Hanger, and every attempt
should be made to find a viable use for which it can be thoroughly rehabilitated.
If it were demolished, much of the visual coherence and quality of the neighbor-
ing parts of Main,. Broad and Redmond Streets would 4feappear.

'lhe Commission is requesting that the Council'ostpone further action upon
designation of the Broadeav District and the Standoioe District. It was
/49Ag w decided at the Public Hearing that these districts should be reconsidered
,9j" end that same alterations should be made in their boundaries.
