PRESERVATION COMMOMSION

REPORT TO THE WWR CITY COUNCIL: October 12, 1977
Re: Council order 365 E
The Historic preservation Commission conducted a walking tour o
September 25, 1977 and a public hearing on October 5, 1997 for the
purpose of reviewing the designation of the Jones P Veazis Ron 0,
Maplewood and &iomsite as historic landmarks under the provisions of
the Historic preservation Decadence. Applications for designation
were received from the coniers of these three struc tubes, and the
proposeddeaignetions were reviewed and approved by the Director of
the Maine Historic preservation Commission.
Me dorsa P. lassie Boase, located at 88 Fountain Street is an
ovtatanding example of the ma and style Iin excellent condition, and
is eligible for the National Register. It was constructed in 1874-5
by the architect. George W. Orff.
Maplewood, located at 8 Montgomery Street, mansard, ris also a well-preserved
also eligible for the Register. Its high placement
at the end of a of treescmtriButes much to the unique quality
of thin historic house•
Poemeite, located at 423 Hancock Street should not be designated
until further study and negotiation with the aweThe majority of
the Commission felt that the recent renovation of the front entrances
was not in keeping with the period or architecture of the house. The
banner has agreed to work further with the Commission on this problem,
se, the Commission would like to postpone final action on this particular
designation.
The Historic preservation Commission requests that Council Order
365AE be amended to delete the designation Of Bcomsite. A separate
order will be submitted later When corrections to the entrances andwhen
the structure's correct name has been documented. The Commission then
requests that the Council give final passage to Council Order 365AE as
amended.
