WHEREAS, Mental health is essential to everyone's overall health and well-being, and mental
illnesses are common, with nearly one in five adults in the United States experiencing a
mental health condition every year; and
WHEREAS, Stigma and the resulting discrimination is a primary obstacle to early identification and
effective treatment of individuals with mental illness; and
WHEREAS, Too many people with mental health needs feel they have nowhere to turn. Suicide is
the tenth leading cause of death in the United States and the second leading cause of
death for our Nation's youth today; and
WHEREAS, Mental health support not only benefits individuals with mental health disorders but also
enriches the culture of our community life by creating a culture of connectivity and
support; and
WHEREAS, Everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health, whether these are
personal challenges or compounded by adverse community environments like the
pandemic, poverty, and discrimination; and
WHEREAS, There are practical tools that all people can use to improve their mental health and
increase resiliency. These tools can be an effective way to reduce the burden of mental
health conditions; and
WHEREAS, The City of Bangor encourages all who need help to call Maine Crisis Hotline: 1-888-
568-1112 or National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255; and
WHEREAS, The City of Bangor continues to support LD968 - Resolve, 'I o Expand ffiental Health
Crisis Intervention Mobile Response Services, which would expand mental health crisis
intervention mobile response services to provide services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
to the entire State; and
WHEREAS, The City of Bangor strives for greater public awareness regarding mental health, which
can change negative attitudes and behaviors toward people with mental illness; and
WHEREAS, The City of Bangor is committed to ensuring that people living with mental health
conditions are treated with respect, compassion, and understanding; and
WHEREAS, The City of Bangor takes pride in upholding the dignity and rights of all its citizens.
