City Council City Nall Ban,or, Maine 04401 Dear Councilors[ I should like to remnant as a private citizen about the proposed solutions to the future use of the Central Fire Station building. Because of the current growth of interest in the physical rehabili- tation of the downtown, and the designation of a large portion of it as an historic district, bringing with it the possible use of federal taxincentives, I feel that the demolition of the building is a inappropriate solution. Reuse for a variety of retail and professional uses is preferable, especially now that the Bangor Nouse project is completed and fully occupied. At the request of developers, possible bfstoric designation of the fire station was explored with the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. Their opinion was that the building in itself would not qualify as an historic landmark but that it would be acceptable in an historic district. They also advised that the upper Main Street area of Bangor including the fire station would qualify as a local district, thus making a larger area of downtown Bangor eligible for federal tax incentives. For these reasons, , I urge that adaptive reuse be given priority over demolitionin this I have been told thst a letter from George Rattermann, Chairman of the Core Area Development Corp., supporta the demolition of the Central Fire Station. Asa member of the corporation, I wish to disavow the arguments in gattermann4 letter. No discussion on the Lqsue w s held by the corporation that I was aware of, and I resent the lecter0a being sent in the name ofmembers who may strongly disagree.
