HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-02-08 RecognitionRECOGNIZING THE BANGOR AREA HOMELESS SHELTER WHEREAS, The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter (BAHS), founded in 1986, is a 38 bed shelter staffed by 21 full and part-time employees; and WHEREAS, Open 24 hours, BAHS provides many services including a soup kitchen, emergency food pantry, and warming shelter supporting the unhoused and the Greater Bangor Community; and WHEREAS, When the COVID-19 Pandemic escalated early in 2020, BAHS prioritized the safety of their guests and staff by compliance with COVID safety protocols; and WHEREAS, During the Pandemic through the end of 2020, BAHS assisted 59 people find stable housing, served over 17,000 meals from their back kitchen door, and provided groceries for over 800 households; and WHEREAS, The staff of BAHS have consistently gone above and beyond in helping people experiencing homelessness. Their quick actions, knowledge, skills, and compassion have helped to save many lives. BAHS staff have undertaken Narcan rescues and assisted a number of unhoused individuals who were without adequate protection from the elements, in imminent danger of the negative health effects of the cold weather; and WHEREAS, By continuing their services for the unhoused and by enforcing their COVI D-1 9 safety precautions, the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter has supported and strengthened the Greater Bangor Community. NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Daniel J. Tremble, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize and thank the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter and their staff for their hard work in this difficult year to support the Greater Bangor Communitv.
