HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-04-12 City Council Minutes MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING BANGOR CITY COUNCIL—APRIL 12, 2021 VIA ZOOM Meeting Called to Order at 7:30 PM Chaired by Council Chair Tremble Councilors Present:Davitt,Dubay, Fournier,Hawes, Nichols, Okafor,Schaefer,Sprague, Tremble Councilors Absent.None Meeting Adjourned: 9:05 PM As approved by the City Council on March 23, 2020, and amended on April 13, 2020, the public may participate at meetings through Zoom, Facebook and television and the City's website. Public comment through Zoom requires a person to state their name and address, any inappropriate or offensive remarks may be removed, and the Council Chair will have discretion over the time allowed for comment. The public may be recognized to speak by the hand wave function or, on a phone, by pressing *9. PROCLAMATION: Proclaimed April 10-16,2021 as the Week of the Young Child PROCLAMATION: Proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month PUBLIC COMMENT Blue Hellwig spoke in favor of public restrooms and felt the needle boxes needed to be more accessible and the houseless community needed to be included in conversations. Katie Thiesen supported the public restrooms and no barrier housing. Robert Kearns stated he was part of the group handing out tents and felt there was a lack of response from the city.He also felt the issue needed to be handled with love and compassion. Eric McVey was in favor or no camping in parks or no the waterfront as these are social activity sites. Seneca Maddocks-Wilbur felt meetings needed to be accessible to everyone. Sam Bullard supported the public restrooms and felt there was a lack of compassion and understanding. She thought there needed to be a permanent place for the homeless to tent. Mike Teller stated the homeless needed a place to stay where they felt safe. Shannon Denbow congratulated Courtney O'Donnell on her new position. She also stated that sharp containers were not the answer and that more detox beds were needed Brian Pitman felt there was no collaboration with the community regarding homelessness to address the root of the problem. Mr.Pitman was in favor of the public restrooms and a safe injection site. Anthony Jackson was disappointed with the city's handling of the homeless problem.
