Introduced by Councilor Saldacci, May, 12, 1990
CITY OF BANGOR
QITEE.) (qT31Br,_ Curb Cut Variance on Columb Street
By tAs City Connalt of the City ofBanyor:
ORDERED,
TMT the attached Petition from Ellen R. Lewis of 62 High
Street, requesting a variance to permit retention of a 54 foot
wide curb cut on the westerly side of Columbia Street between
Middle Street and Union Street, in lieu of the maximum 36 foot
opening allowed by Ordinance, be and hereby is accepted, and
be it further
ORDERED, That said variance be granted.
STATEMENT OF FACT
The existing curbcut serves six perpendicular parkingspaces
for an apartment building. The Department of Public Works is
presently in the process of installing new granite curbing
along Columbia Street, and under such circumstances would
normally bring the curb cut opening into conformance with the
Ordinance.

Dear Mr. Frawley
I own a ala -apartment house at fit High Street In Bangor.
The property extends through the block to Columbia Street and the
parking for the six apartments is on Columbia Street. There are
six spaces with a curb cut of 54 feet.
I was informed yesterday that the reconstruction of Colon-
bio street will include new granite curbs and the curb cut allowed
will only be 36 feet. This eliminates two spaces and means that I
will only have four perking spaces far a six -apartment house. I
understand that only the City Council can grant an exception to this
36' rule. '- --
Those ppaces are very Important for overnight parking far
the residents during the winter and are also used by the adjoining
business office during the day. Because most on -street parking has
been eliminated in this area, these spaces are vitally needed.
Granting this request will present no safety hazard, no
inconvenience to the public, end no additional expense to the City.
Not granting this request will create a very difficult problem.
Very truly yours,
EL/If
